deoparHello everyone, I am currently looking into whether and how IKEA Brimnes furniture can be recolored without affecting the furniture’s structure or functionality. My question is: Are there practical and proven methods to alter the surfaces of the BRIMNES series, especially the cabinet doors and drawer fronts, using paint, film, or other techniques in a way that preserves the original material while creating a new color or look? It is also important for me to know what preparations are necessary, if there are specific products that are particularly suitable, and whether cleaning or durability aspects need to be considered. I already have some ideas in mind, but practical experiences or advice would be very helpful. Thanks for your tips!
One of the most common methods to change the color of IKEA BRIMNES furniture is painting after thorough preparation. The following points are crucial:
- The surface must first be cleaned well and lightly sanded, for example with fine sandpaper (grit 220), to ensure the paint adheres properly.
- It is best to use a primer suitable for coated furniture, as BRIMNES often has a melamine or laminate surface.
- For the actual painting, acrylic paints or two-component (2K) paints are recommended because they are durable and resistant.
- An alternative is self-adhesive furniture film (vinyl wrap), which can be easily applied to smooth surfaces; these should be dust-free and grease-free beforehand.
- After painting or applying the film, a longer drying or curing time must be observed; however, mechanical stress (e.g., frequent drawer use) can lead to slight wear.
It is important to proceed professionally to achieve a lasting and appealing result. Simple repainting without preparation usually leads to unsatisfactory outcomes.

I would also add that the surfaces of BRIMNES furniture are often very smooth and laminated, so it is essential to test the suitability of the primer in an inconspicuous area first. Additionally, I recommend:
- Removing all metal parts and handles, if possible, to prevent damage to the painted finish in these areas.
- When using water-based paints, which are easier to work with, ensure good ventilation is maintained.
- For those who prefer not to paint, high-quality furniture films can be a time-saving and reversible alternative.
For anyone who has worked with spray paint: this method allows for a more even surface but requires experience with spray distance and drying times. In general, the better the preparation, the more professional the result.

Are there practical and proven methods to redesign the surfaces of the BRIMNES series, especially cabinet doors and drawer fronts, using paint, film, or other techniques so that the original material is well preserved while achieving a new color or look?Hey, this topic is really interesting! I personally have covered a dresser from the BRIMNES series with special furniture films, and it looks great! 😊
It’s important, as mentioned, that the surface is properly clean and free of grease – I used alcohol-based cleaners for that. Good quality films are really durable and have held up without issues for over a year in my case!
If you like experimenting, you can also try chalk or blackboard paint – they create a nice matte texture and are ideal for changes you might want to alter later. Just make sure to test it on completely smooth and sealed surfaces.
What I also recommend is to take your time when applying films or painting, because rushed work tends to look messy. So don’t be afraid to try it – the DIY experience is really fun and brings a fresh vibe to your home!
