Thorben3821 Oct 2016 19:23Hello everyone,
I recently acquired several IKEA Hemnes furniture pieces for my living area, and I live in a household with pets (a cat and a dog). Unfortunately, pet hair regularly accumulates, and the furniture surfaces show signs of wear, including occasional scratches and moisture stains. My specific question is: How can I clean IKEA Hemnes furniture, especially those made of wood/pine wood, in homes with pets so that I effectively remove pet hair while avoiding damage to the material? Are there any special care products or recommended cleaning techniques you would suggest for this purpose? I would be very grateful for any tips to help keep the furniture looking good and functional for as long as possible.
Thank you in advance!

Hello Thorben38,
Your question is very well posed and addresses an issue that many people with wooden furniture know, especially when pets are involved. IKEA HEMNES furniture is mostly made of solid pine wood, which is sturdy but can still suffer over time from moisture and dirt. In a household with pets, the problem with pet hair and occasional moisture marks is even greater.
First: To remove pet hair, I recommend using a soft, clean microfiber dust cloth that picks up the hair without scratching the surface. Alternatively, a dry rubber squeegee, like those used for glass, can also be helpful. It is important not to use too much water, as the wood absorbs moisture and can warp.
For cleaning the surfaces, you can mix lukewarm water with a mild wood soap, apply it with a soft cloth, and then wipe dry thoroughly.
Regarding moisture: Make sure no wet pet paws or moisture remain directly on the surface. To protect the wood, you can use furniture wax or wood balm to build a light protective layer that makes the wood more resistant. However, please only use products that are specifically recommended for untreated pine wood.
Could you tell me more about the exact furniture pieces? Are they waxed, oiled, or lacquered? And what are your main issues (e.g., scratches, odors, stains)? Then I can provide more targeted advice.

That way I can help more specifically.Thank you for the quick and detailed response! Our HEMNES furniture is primed and then treated with a clear lacquer, which makes the surface quite smooth and significantly more durable than just waxed wood. So far, scratches have been rare, but I’ve noticed that dust and pet hair tend to stick strongly, especially on the flat surfaces. Moisture stains occur when, for example, water spills from the pet bowls—that happens from time to time. Odors from pet hair haven’t been a major issue yet, but a thorough cleaning of the wooden surfaces is difficult.
Since the clear lacquer is supposed to protect the wood, I am wondering whether I can simply use special cleaners for lacquered wood surfaces, or if that might not be suitable for HEMNES furniture? Also, how appropriate is it to use damp cloths on this clear lacquer finish?

Based on experience with painted furniture like your HEMNES series, I can recommend the following:
- For daily cleaning, slightly dampen a microfiber cloth— it should be just barely moist— and wipe the surface to remove dust and hair.
- Avoid using aggressive cleaners or alcohol-based products, as these can permanently damage the clear lacquer finish.
- For stains, a specialized furniture cleaner for painted surfaces usually helps; apply it sparingly. Make sure the cleaner does not contain abrasive particles.
- To remove pet hair from hard-to-reach areas, regular vacuuming directly on the furniture is advisable, since hair often gets stuck in grooves and small gaps.
- For occasional deep cleaning, products containing wax components are suitable, as they form a protective layer over the lacquer. This helps protect against moisture and minimizes scratches.
As an alternative for moisture stains, carefully blot with a dry cloth. If you use paper towels or tissues, they can leave lint on the surface—cotton cloths are better.
I’m also curious how often the furniture is in direct contact with the pet’s living area—that is, whether water and hair regularly get on the surfaces or only occasionally? Do you use mats or pads under the bowls? This can significantly reduce the stress on the furniture.

Hey Thorben38, that sounds like a real challenge, but don’t worry! With the right tips, you can keep your HEMNES furniture in great condition, even with pets 🐶🐱!
I always use a slightly damp microfiber cloth on my furniture and regularly remove pet hair with a soft rubber roller – it works great!
You can quickly fix scratches with fine furniture wax or wood polish. Important: don’t apply too much, as it helps repel water and dust! And blot any wet spots immediately instead of wiping, otherwise, they’ll spread!
Be confident, the furniture is more durable than you think. And don’t forget: your pets are part of your home – with a little care, everything will stay in top shape! Good luck! 😊
