ᐅ How durable are Ikea Brimnes furniture pieces after frequent moves?

Hello everyone,

I have recently been thinking about whether Ikea Brimnes furniture is really stable enough for frequent moving. I own several pieces from this series and, due to my job, I move quite often—on average every 1-2 years. I am interested in how the quality and stability of Brimnes furniture hold up with such frequent assembly and disassembly.

In particular, I would like to know if there are typical weak points that are especially affected by repeated dismantling, or if the furniture generally remains sturdy. Are there any experiences regarding whether hinges, dowels, or joints tend to weaken over time? Also, how can the lifespan realistically be assessed when regularly taking the furniture apart and putting it back together?

It would be great to hear from people who have moved often themselves and use Ikea Brimnes. Thanks in advance!

I have had Brimnes furniture for 4 years and have moved three times during that period—so it has been assembled and dismantled quite often. Of course, you can see some signs of use here and there, especially on the edges, but the furniture is holding up really well.

Particle boards tend to tear or split after a few assemblies

I haven’t really noticed that with mine so far—maybe I have just always been very careful! My experience is that with a bit of patience and care, Brimnes makes a reliable companion for moving.

It is also important to store screws and dowels properly; otherwise, it can get frustrating.

Questions about durability and stability with frequent relocations can be explained from the manufacturer’s perspective and material science:

- Brimnes uses MDF/particleboard, which due to its material properties is not designed for repeated assembly and disassembly.
- Mechanical fasteners, such as dowels or Minifix connectors, are not optimized for frequent dismantling.
- Regular reassembly leads to loosening and wear of the fastening points.

Conclusion: Brimnes furniture is intended more for permanent installation. It lacks the necessary design features for multiple moves.

From a technical point of view, I recommend choosing specially modular or professional moving furniture if you plan to move frequently.

So, you shouldn't rely solely on personal experiences but keep in mind that furniture like Brimnes isn't designed to be moved frequently.

Thank you for this critical perspective – it also confirms what I suspected.

However, good storage of screws and dowels is also important; otherwise, it becomes frustrating.

Could you elaborate a bit more on that? How exactly do you store your fasteners? And have you ever replaced them, or do you always use the originals?

This is of interest to me, as I am looking for a practical solution for handling during a move.

How do you specifically store your connectors?

I put all screws, wall plugs, and small parts into small zip bags, label them accordingly, and keep them in a sturdy box. This way, nothing gets lost and everything can be found quickly during assembly.

If wall plugs become worn out, it’s best to get new ones and replace them. Original spare parts are usually not in stock, but standard wall plugs generally fit.
