Hello everyone, I recently purchased a Pax wardrobe system from Ikea and would now like to customize the doors with adhesive films. I am particularly interested in questions such as: Which types of films are especially suitable for the Pax doors, which usually have a smooth MDF surface? How should I apply the film to avoid bubbles or wrinkles? Are there any tips or special tools that can improve the result? Also, could you recommend films that are durable over time and easy to clean? I want to adjust the doors’ color and maybe add patterns without damaging the surface. Thank you in advance for your experiences and advice!

Wow, great question! The PAX doors are really well suited for applying films to create a completely custom look! 😊 In my experience, high-quality self-adhesive vinyl films work best because they are durable and relatively easy to handle. It’s really important to thoroughly clean the surface beforehand—ideally with a degreasing cleaner—so the film adheres properly.

When applying, it helps to slowly and smoothly stick the film on, preferably using a squeegee or a smooth plastic card to push out air bubbles. If small bubbles do appear, you can carefully prick them with a needle and press the air out.

And honestly: go for it! Small mistakes can often be corrected, and it’s simply fun to design the look yourself. Good luck with your project!

I completely agree! I once had the experience of not cleaning the doors well enough, and the film started peeling off at the edges after a few weeks.

What I would like to add: it’s best to apply the adhesive film on a warm day or in a well-heated room. Cold temperatures can reduce the adhesive strength and make the films harder to install.

I also once tried a version with magnetic film, which allowed me to change the design repeatedly. However, the downside is that the door surface can get slightly damaged if you remove the film often.

I understand it might be a bit daunting, but with good preparation, it works really well!

The fundamental question I am asking myself is: How durable does the wrapping really need to be?

Besides squeegees and regular cleaning cloths, heat guns can also be used to make the wrap material more flexible. This can significantly improve adhesion, especially around door edges. However, caution is required, as excessive heat can damage the paint or MDF.

Furthermore, you should consider that some types of wraps are sensitive to UV light and may fade over time – particularly if the doors receive frequent sunlight exposure.

Another point to consider is whether it might be more cost-effective or efficient to have the wraps applied by a professional company, especially for complex patterns or when an absolutely flawless finish is desired.

Of course, this goes against the DIY approach, but sometimes the long-term results are a better investment.

Exactly, regarding tools: A soft squeegee made of felt or rubber is ideal for applying the film without scratching it. I also recommend using a paint roller or a soft cloth to press the film down afterward. Before applying the film, make sure to thoroughly degrease the doors and dry them with a lint-free cloth.

One more tip: When cutting the film, allow for some overlap that will be folded over the edges later. This helps achieve cleaner edges and ensures better adhesion.

And if you want to apply patterns: Prepare a template or use grid lines in advance to align the design precisely. Good luck with your project!
