Hello everyone, I want to add some extra inserts to my IKEA Besta shelving unit to create a more customized layout. My question is: What are the best fastening options to securely and permanently attach additional shelves or inserts within a Besta system? It’s important to me that the solution is stable, preferably reversible or can be done without causing significant damage to the furniture, and that it doesn’t affect the appearance. I’ve considered small screws, brackets, or special fittings, but I’m not sure what the best approach is. Are there any suitable IKEA accessories, DIY tips, or specific components you would recommend? Thanks in advance for your advice!

It is important to ensure that the rear stability is not compromised, especially if the insert is expected to bear weight. Screws in the side panels should always be used sparingly to avoid damaging the material.Thank you, that is an important point I had not really considered. Are the standard drill holes in Besta also suitable for other types of inserts later on, or should they ideally be used as intended? I ask because I am planning some inserts that differ slightly in size.

- Drill your own holes in inconspicuous areas.
- Use brackets that can also be secured with screws to the bottom or back panel.
- Always ensure not to damage any load-bearing elements.
If you want to maintain the appearance, hidden fittings can be used that remain invisible when the shelf is closed.

For example, I’ve mounted small perforated plates or rails on the sides to slide inserts in and out. Experiment with it – it’s worth it and a lot of fun!
