Hello everyone,
I have had several Kallax shelves for some time, and individual modules have developed unsightly stains or discolorations. These are mostly dark or water stains, likely caused by contact with liquids or prolonged storage. My question to the community is: Are there professional services that specialize in refurbishing such stained Kallax modules?
I am not looking for DIY cleaning tips, but rather providers who offer renovation or restoration services with market experience, ideally with guarantees or at least proven methods that can restore the wood or surface to an attractive condition. Has anyone ever used such a service or knows of companies offering this?
Thanks in advance for your feedback!

Hello everyone,
to make the topic a bit clearer for everyone: Kallax units are actually made from particleboard with a thin surface laminate. Stains can penetrate the laminate, which is why simple cleaning often isn’t enough.
If you want to have it done professionally, there are restorers and furniture repair specialists who focus specifically on laminated furniture. The process usually involves removing the old laminate and applying a new one.
This isn’t necessarily cheap, but if the furniture has emotional value, it can definitely be worth it. For standardized Ikea shelves, it is often economically questionable.

That’s exactly how I see it as well.

If you mean restoration with value retention, this service is rare and comparatively expensive.

Good morning,
I would like to add a brief overview regarding the restoration of stained Kallax modules.
1. Material analysis: Kallax is usually made of particleboard with a melamine foil or another type of plastic coating. Stains on these foils do not penetrate deeply into the material but can be superficially burned in or caused by heat or paint.
2. Professional cleaning: Some service providers use special cleaning agents that can remove stubborn stains such as grease, paint, or water. It is important that these products do not damage the foil.
3. Reapplying the foil: If cleaning is not sufficient, there are professionals who remove the foil and apply a new one—similar to furniture or surface wrapping.
4. Sanding and painting: This is difficult or impossible with melamine coatings, as the layer is very thin and sanding can expose the particleboard underneath.
5. Replacing module parts: Replacement panels can be purchased and installed if the correct dimensions are known. Skilled craftsmen offer this service as well.
In conclusion: Restoration is possible but not always cost-effective compared to buying new. However, it makes sense for valuable or hard-to-replace furniture.
I hope this helps.

Wow, the topic might sound pretty dry at first, but there’s actually more to it! 🙂
I really appreciate that there are professionals who deal with IKEA shelves and their quirks! Some things are really too good to throw away – so it’s great when they can be professionally restored!
Let’s keep going and gather more experiences on how to get the best results removing these kinds of stains!

That sounds really promising – maybe such cleaning is worth doing every now and then for a bit of “refreshing”! 🙂

An additional important note: When using service providers who offer renovation of Kallax modules, it is advisable to have a written agreement before commissioning, specifying the technical procedures to be used and the warranty conditions—especially regarding foil refurbishment.
Since these are not solid wood, damage from cleaning or foil replacement is not uncommon. Transparency in the process and cost planning is therefore essential.
Those who value professional results should also compare quotes and, if necessary, request references.

Marking from experience:
If you want to have spotted Kallax modules professionally refinished to a high standard, it is usually a custom job – not a standard service.
The reason: The material structure and coating are not designed for simple renovation. This requires craftsmanship, knowledge of the materials, and often specialized equipment.
In short: Professional providers do exist, but they are rare and the effort involved is significant. It is advisable to get a detailed assessment and possibly a cost estimate beforehand.
