RuslanHello everyone,
I recently bought the Ikea Hemnes sideboard for my balcony and am now working on making it weather-resistant, as the balcony unfortunately is neither covered nor well protected from wind. The piece is made of solid pine wood and is originally intended for indoor use, so I want to protect it as best as possible against moisture, UV radiation, and temperature fluctuations to prevent mold, warping, or swelling.
My specific question for you: What practical and proven methods are there to make the Ikea Hemnes weatherproof for a balcony or terrace? I’m thinking of suitable coatings, oils, impregnations, or other protective measures that preserve the appearance while providing long-term protection. It would also be interesting to know if it makes sense to raise the furniture on stilts or legs to avoid direct contact with the ground when it rains.
I’m grateful for any helpful tips and experiences!

great idea to protect your Hemnes for use on a balcony or terrace! 😉 I’m a big fan of properly sealing wood so it doesn’t wear down when exposed to the elements. I would definitely recommend thoroughly sanding the sideboard first to roughen the surface. Then apply a clear weatherproof varnish, ideally a wood paint with UV protection. This prevents the wood from fading and keeps it looking nice.
Raising the furniture is absolutely sensible! Nothing is worse than wet feet on furniture. Use small furniture risers or plastic feet underneath – this helps prevent standing water and also protects against mold growth from below.
And don’t forget regular maintenance coats – roughly every 1–2 years, otherwise the protective layer will wear off. Good luck – wood appreciates care like a pet! 😄

Additionally, I would like to add that for solid wood like pine, using a wood preservative based on paraffin or a water-repellent agent is highly advisable. Such impregnations penetrate deeply into the wood structure and protect against moisture from within.

After that, a transparent weatherproof varnish is applied, preferably a wood varnish with UV protection.I also recommend that. A 2- or 3-coat system is often more effective: first the primer/impregnation, then the topcoat. Those who want to maintain the appearance can opt for a transparent stain.
For raising the piece on feet: a construction with small spacers is practical so air can circulate well and the wood can dry from underneath. This helps prevent standing water and frequent exposure to moisture.
If you clean the furniture piece first, use a mild cleaner—avoid aggressive chemicals that can damage the wood.
Brief and to the point:
- Sand the furniture
- Treat the wood with preservative oil (e.g., linseed oil with resin)
- Then apply a protective varnish with UV protection
- Raise the furniture on small feet or casters
- Regularly re-oil and varnish, depending on exposure, every 1-2 years
This effectively protects against rain and sun.

Regarding the weatherproofing of the Ikea Hemnes, I would like to provide a clear and structured summary:
1. Material Analysis: Hemnes furniture is made of lacquered solid pine wood. The clear varnish is primarily designed for indoor use and offers limited weather resistance.
2. Treatment Steps:
- Sanding the surface to remove old varnish and allow the absorption of wood preservatives.
- Using a wood preservative with fungicidal properties and water-repellent characteristics.
- Applying a UV-resistant stain or weatherproof coating, preferably with multiple layers.
3. Placement:
- Furniture should not be placed directly on the ground.
- Using supports such as plastic feet, wooden wedges, or metal rollers protects against moisture from below and promotes air circulation.
4. Maintenance:
- Regular inspections and reapplications at least once a year.
- Prompt re-treatment in case of abrasion or damage to prevent moisture penetration.
This systematic approach significantly extends the service life of your Hemnes furniture in outdoor settings.

Regular inspections and maintenance at least once a year.I want to emphasize this again – it’s absolutely essential! No weather protection lasts forever if the furniture isn’t properly maintained.
I have also found it helpful to use small rubber or felt pads under the feet, not only to protect the floor from moisture but also to make it easier to move the furniture.
And a tip on the side: If you have the option, use a cover during winter or extended periods of bad weather. This provides an additional layer of protection, even if the furniture is designed to be weather-resistant.
Good luck with your outdoor renovation of your Hemnes; it will definitely work out!
