Hello everyone, I have a question that has been on my mind for a while: Why don’t some Billy bookcases from IKEA fit properly into corners? Specifically, I mean why is it that a Billy bookcase, despite its standard dimensions and seemingly simple design, cannot be positioned perfectly to fit into a room corner? Are there particular design limitations, or is it an issue related to room measurements or cutting? I find this interesting because many say Billy bookcases are flexible, but somehow they don’t seem to work well in corners. Does anyone have experience with this or can explain it in detail?

This is often because the Billy shelves have a fixed frame that is not designed for perfect 90-degree corners. The back panel is usually attached on only three sides and is not suitable for corner fitting. Special corner connectors are needed, or the shelf cannot be placed flush against both walls.

Interesting point, Hannah. But is it really true that the construction of Billy shelves is generally inflexible when it comes to corners? I suspect it is more due to the room geometry and inaccuracies in the measurements. Many apartments do not have perfectly 90-degree corners, and the back panel plus the floor are not always exactly aligned either. Therefore, even a standardized shelf won’t fit perfectly. Maybe adjustments should be made to the room rather than the shelf.

That’s an interesting approach! But that’s exactly what makes it challenging. Rooms are naturally fixed, and IKEA’s Billy relies on a modular design. I had thought the shelves were designed so they could be placed in standard homes without major alterations. If you constantly had to adapt them to walls and corners, wouldn’t that defeat the purpose?

It’s great that several people are working on this here! 🙂 I think the Billy shelves are very flexible, but of course, a corner is a corner—and if a wall isn’t 100% straight or the floor is slightly uneven, it won’t fit perfectly. For me, a bit of fiddling and using brackets was enough to position the shelf securely and correctly. So: don’t get discouraged! 😉

I think the whole discussion is somewhat overanalyzed. Yes, a Billy bookshelf was never designed for perfect corner solutions because IKEA prefers mass compatibility over specialized solutions. Why would anyone expect such an affordable piece of furniture to offer custom fitting? If you need a corner shelf, then buy one that is marketed as a corner shelf – simple as that. This expectation of the Billy is simply unrealistic and causes unnecessary frustration.
