ᐅ What helps prevent shelves from slipping in BILLY bookcases?

Hello everyone, I have a problem with my IKEA BILLY shelves that is really frustrating: the shelves keep slipping out or shifting whenever I take something off or put something on them. This not only causes disorder but is also quite annoying over time and doesn’t seem very stable.

My question is: What are proven, long-lasting, and preferably residue-free methods to effectively prevent the BILLY shelves from slipping? I don’t want to make major modifications; I’d like the shelving unit to remain as close to its original condition as possible, but a practical solution to stop the slipping would be great.

Maybe someone has good tips or tried-and-tested tricks that help without compromising the stability or appearance of the shelves? Thanks in advance for your suggestions!

How is your shelf currently loaded? Are the shelves heavily loaded or mostly empty?

Thanks, that’s a good point. The shelf is moderately loaded, mainly with books and some decorative items. The weight distribution is rather uneven.

non-slip material strips, e.g. rubber or silicone pads

Such pads could work. Do you have a preference whether they should be attached directly to the shelves or to the shelf supports?

Attach felt gliders to the shelf surfaces

Felt gliders are interesting; I’ll give that a try.

Just add more weight, then nothing slides.

That’s not really a solution for me, since the slipping also happens when I intentionally remove something — it should hold even without being fully loaded all the time.

I think the issue is often exaggerated.

I see it differently. If a shelf is inherently designed in a way that leads to annoying consequences, that is not a minor matter.

That’s precisely why a shelf in this price range should still offer a basic level of stability. You could argue that the user has to reinforce it, but the manufacturer could invest much more in quality here.

glue small wooden strips to the back that hook into the side rails

That’s clever, but to me it’s an alteration that significantly changes the shelf. I doubt this is always desirable.

So, it’s a matter of balancing convenience and original condition. But concerning the slipping, this is not a trivial issue—it’s a weak point that is criticized quite often.

Exactly my thought. Everyone wants to keep the shelf original and preferably leave no marks behind.

I have always glued them to the underside of the shelves. That way they have more contact area and hold better. But it can vary depending on the type of pad.

Please don’t use very strong adhesives, otherwise you will really have trouble removing them later. For me, the compromise between hold and easy removal works best.

That’s true in theory, but in everyday use it’s often not practical. When you briefly take something out, nothing should slip, right? 🙂
