ᐅ How do I build IKEA Metod kitchen islands with an additional workspace?

I
IXRANIHello everyone,
I’m planning to build an IKEA Metod kitchen island with an additional work surface in my kitchen. I mainly want to know how to best combine the Metod base cabinets to create a stable and functional island that also provides enough space for both countertop and storage. It’s important to me to extend the work area so that it seamlessly connects to the island – for example, adding an extra countertop without making it wobbly or compromising the appearance.
I’m also interested in how you handle the installation of the toe kicks and the securing of the individual modules to ensure everything is really stable. Are there any general tips or special tools you would recommend when working with Metod islands? I look forward to your experience reports and detailed instructions or advice on how to do this best.

I would always start by assembling the base cabinets of the kitchen island first, then place the countertop on top and secure it with clamps. For the additional work area, it’s best to use a shelving unit or base cabinet element that you can screw to the island. The plinth and stability are definitely important – make sure everything is level and the feet are properly adjusted.
Hello IXRANI,
When building a Metod kitchen island with an additional work area, I recommend the following approach:
- First, plan the exact size of the island and the work area. Ideally, use measuring tapes and mark the position on the floor.
- Connect the Metod base cabinets using the connector screws provided by IKEA. Make sure the cabinets are perfectly square to each other; otherwise, it will be difficult to install the countertop later.
- For the additional work area, a tall cabinet or an extra base cabinet that attaches to the island usually works well. To achieve a seamless look for the countertop, you can join it using suitable clamps or secure it from underneath with sturdy metal brackets. It is important to consider the weight and add reinforcements if needed.
- To stabilize the plinth, I usually use height-adjustable feet that IKEA offers for Metod. These help compensate for any unevenness in the floor.
- In addition to a screwdriver or drill, I recommend having a spirit level, cordless screwdriver, metal brackets, wood glue, and clamps for the countertop as tools.
One more question for you: What material do you want to use for the countertop? Solid wood or laminate? This affects how it should be fastened and its weight.

I want to build a kitchen island with a continuous countertop made of solid wood, especially oak, as it should have a warmer feel. For the additional work area, I was thinking of wood as well, possibly matching the island but not exactly the same. I assume I will need reinforcement here, mainly because of the weight.
How strong should the connections between the island and the work area be, and are there any special considerations for solid wood? Otherwise, I can level the bases with these IKEA legs, which sounds helpful.
Solid wood countertops require a bit more attention during installation. It is important to:
- Treat the countertop before installation to address moisture and tension, for example with oil.
- Create flexible joints that can accommodate temperature and humidity fluctuations.
When connecting an island to an additional work surface, I would recommend installing metal brackets or connectors from below that provide enough load-bearing capacity while allowing minimal movement. Avoid rigid gluing, as the wood may expand or contract, causing cracks.
Attaching countertops to IKEA Metod cabinets is done using mounting rails and clamps. For heavier countertops, additional support with wooden battens or metal profiles underneath is advisable. Height and levelness are very important for this.
If you plan to design corners or transitions, make sure the countertop is cut out or reinforced to prevent stress at sensitive points.
An alternative option is to design the additional work area as a separate, free-standing countertop if the installation seems too complicated.
