I own several IKEA Malm furniture pieces, mainly dressers and nightstands with light birch veneer. Since I have cats that occasionally scratch the furniture or sometimes leave small claw marks, I’m wondering how to best care for my Malm furniture so it stays nice for a long time and doesn't get damaged. Specifically: Which cleaning products are suitable, how can the surface be best protected, and are there any special home remedies or products that help with wear caused by pets? I don’t just want to wipe them superficially but also want to maintain the furniture to minimize scratches or discoloration. Thanks in advance for tips, preferably ones you have tried yourself.
Hello paujohnny, I completely understand your concern, as pets present a particular challenge for wooden furniture like the Malm series. The surface is usually a thin veneer layer, which is sensitive to moisture and harsh cleaning agents. I recommend using only a slightly damp, not dripping, cloth as a basic cleaning method. Avoid aggressive cleaners or abrasive substances, as they damage the veneer more than they help.
That is absolutely correct. Additionally, while you can’t completely prevent cat scratches, you can mitigate them somewhat: it’s best to place scratching posts or furniture near the Malm furniture so the cats have an alternative to the furniture itself. For surface care, there are special furniture oils or care sprays that help keep the wood supple longer and conceal minor wear.
That’s a good tip; I would just add that it’s better to test such products on inconspicuous spots first. In summary: gentle care, protection against scratches by providing alternatives for the cats, and targeted use of repair products when needed.

From my experience, moisture is the biggest enemy of veneer furniture. Use only a slightly damp cloth, never wipe with a wet one. If cats often leave scratches, trimming their claws gently with a filing tool helps protect the furniture finish over time.
I would strongly recommend that as well. Also, make sure no food bowls or damp spots remain on the furniture, as the veneer can swell otherwise.
Additionally, you can easily refresh the surface and reduce minor micro-scratches with furniture cream. I like to use products containing carnauba wax, as they provide good protection without sticky residue.

sonrickey13 Nov 2015 15:27Hey paujohnny 🙂 Cats and Malm furniture are a combination that often causes headaches. In my experience, patience and a sense of humor are the best helpers! 🐱
Look, I always try to protect the furniture from scratches by placing small felt pads under decorations and similar items. This way, the surface is preserved and stays looking great for a long time.
Also, I find that polishing with a well-tolerated furniture wax helps to minimize fine scratches and gives the wood a really nice warm tone—almost like the furniture is “healing” itself. ;-)
And if the cats still climb on the furniture, try placing a scratching post or cat tree right next to it—both the cats and your Malm furniture will be happy! 🙂

Hello everyone,
I would like to take a closer look at this topic from a maintenance perspective. IKEA Malm furniture consists of veneer surfaces with a thin wood layer, often coated with melamine or lacquer. Pet owners should especially keep the following in mind:
1. Cleaning:
- Use only soft, slightly damp cloths (e.g., microfiber). Avoid harsh cleaners or abrasive cloths at all costs.
2. Protection from Scratches:
- Sharp claws are difficult to fully prevent. Provide pets with dedicated scratching furniture as an alternative.
- Minor scratches can be repaired with color-matched furniture markers or waxes. Important: Test first on an inconspicuous spot.
3. Avoid Liquids:
- In areas with pets, moisture spots can occur from drinking or cleaning. Wipe these up immediately to prevent swelling and warping of the veneer.
4. Regular Maintenance:
- Treat the furniture once a month with special furniture oil or wax to keep the surface supple and more resistant to wear.
Summary:
A consistent and gentle cleaning routine combined with effective claw protection is essential for maintaining Malm furniture in homes with pets.
