Hello everyone, I am currently looking into ways to reduce the noise from Malm dresser drawers. The standard Malm from IKEA often has the issue that the drawers slam loudly or even squeak when opened and closed, which can be quite disturbing, especially in quiet moments. I would like to know what practical methods you are aware of to effectively dampen or at least quiet these drawer noises without affecting the function or appearance of the dresser. I am interested in both technical solutions like dampers or self-adhesive materials, as well as maintenance tips for the drawer mechanism, since I suspect there are often improvements to be made there. I look forward to your experience and opinions, ideally with some background information so I can better understand the measures.

I installed felt strips on the drawers myself. Since then, the noise has been significantly reduced. I can definitely recommend it; it’s inexpensive and quick to do.

Replacement or addition of rubber buffers: The small bump stops absorb energy when closing to prevent loud bangs.

Can anyone confirm if these dampers are originally installed on the Malm, or are they more of an aftermarket addition? I suspect that inexpensive Ikea furniture often cuts corners, but I might be wrong. It would also be important to know how easy it is to replace them without having to fully remove the drawer. If anyone has detailed experience with this, please share.

The Malm models often have small plastic or rubber buffers on the underside of the drawers, but these are usually quite thin or relatively hard. Therefore, you can tell that they provide little cushioning.

Aftermarket dampers made of silicone or soft rubber are much more effective and not expensive. Removing the drawer is recommended for replacement, but not absolutely necessary if you can reach the right spots. With some patience, you can also change them while the drawer is still installed.

I have done this myself and can recommend it. A bit of leverage helps when removing the old buffers.

Hey, I just wanted to quickly share something funny 😊. Your Malm drawers really sometimes shut like a horror movie character screaming!

Jokes aside – what worked great for me were these self-adhesive felt or foam strips on the edges. The effect is almost like a cushioning battle for the drawer. Plus, opening feels much smoother.

And when it gets loud, just grab some rubber bumpers, place them in the right spots, and the Malm will find its peace.

A tip: Always tackle it in small steps and with a good mood – that way it’s fun too! 🙂
