Hello everyone, I am planning to install an IKEA METOD kitchen on drywall and I am uncertain about the mounting, especially since drywall is not a traditional load-bearing wall. My specific question is: Are there reliable and long-lasting methods or suitable anchors/components to securely attach the METOD wall cabinets and base cabinets to drywall without the risk of the furniture falling down later or damaging the wall? I have heard that using appropriate heavy-duty anchors, drywall anchors, or additional reinforcements such as wooden battens behind the wall might be necessary. What are your experiences? Do you have any specific advice on what to pay attention to in order to ensure stability, especially given that kitchens can often be quite heavy? Thank you in advance for your recommendations!

Hello urielzar34, your question is very well formulated, and this is indeed a common challenge with METOD kitchens on drywall (plasterboard) walls. Drywall itself cannot directly support heavy loads, so a well-thought-out mounting solution is essential. Generally, I recommend the following approach:

- First, carefully check the substructure: Where are the wooden studs or metal profiles behind the drywall? These are the points where you can securely fasten screws.
- For areas without load-bearing studs, you might consider using special cavity anchors (e.g., metal cavity anchors, also called toggle bolts), but these are only suitable for lighter loads and not for supporting the entire weight of the cabinets.
- A very secure method is to install an additional wooden batten or rail behind the drywall, to which you can then attach the kitchen cabinets. This might require repairing the drywall or installing a second layer of drywall beforehand to increase stability.

It is also important to fix the cabinets as directly as possible to the studs and to distribute the load across multiple points.

I would fully agree with that. Avoid fastening solely into drywall, as this can be dangerous.

One more question: How thick is your drywall, and do you know the construction of the studs behind it? This greatly affects the choice of fixing method.

This topic is really sensitive – I know the feeling when you have to install a kitchen on drywall and constantly wonder if it will hold or not. Your fear of a possible collapse is completely understandable.

From my own experience, what worked well was not just anchoring directly into the drywall, but either screwing directly into the wooden studs behind it or installing additional reinforcement.

I also found that very helpful because it distributes the entire load. It also gave me a lot of confidence to know someone had thought it through instead of just saying “use heavy-duty anchors.” Especially if you’re planning to keep the kitchen for a while, it’s worth the effort. But I also know that’s not always possible.

How about you: can you get behind the wall, or do you have the option to open up the drywall?

Hello urielzar34! It’s great that you’re asking such detailed questions—this is really important when installing kitchens! 🙂 I had the same issue with drywall and IKEA METOD cabinets here. My advice: definitely use metal hollow wall anchors; they hold much better than plastic anchors.

If possible, and if the wall condition allows, I would recommend attaching a wooden batten horizontally as a subframe, then use that beam to securely screw in the upper kitchen cabinets. This way, the weight is distributed much better!

Definitely yes! But mounting only on drywall really won’t work long-term—the wall will eventually fail. So: combine hollow wall anchors with proper support systems, and it will work perfectly! Fingers crossed, it will turn out great!
