Hello everyone, I have had a squeaking drawer in my IKEA Metod kitchen for some time now. The noise occurs whenever I pull or push the drawer, especially under load or when the drawer is full. I suspect the mechanical runners or the slides are causing the problem, possibly due to friction from insufficient lubrication or deposits. My question is: How can I reliably fix a squeaking IKEA Metod drawer to permanently eliminate the noise without damaging the drawer system or risking the warranty? Are there any specific lubricants or techniques that have proven effective? Thanks for your help!

It is best to first fully pull out the drawer and clean the sliding rails. Then apply a suitable lubricant such as silicone spray or graphite powder to the rails. Avoid oily greases, as they attract dirt. If the rail is damaged, it may need to be replaced.

Hello mertan46,

I’m addressing your description and providing you with a structured step-by-step guide that I have successfully used several times:

- Carefully pull out the drawer: Use the release mechanism on the Metod drawer to completely detach it from the cabinet.
- Visual inspection: Check the runners and rollers for dirt, rust, or visible damage.
- Cleaning: Use a lint-free cloth with a bit of isopropanol to thoroughly clean the runners and rollers. Deposits are often the cause of noise.
- Lubrication: For Metod drawers, silicone-based sprays or dry lubricants are suitable because they do not attract dirt. Avoid WD-40 or oil-based products.
- Test run: Reinsert the drawer and slowly open and close it several times to ensure the lubricant is evenly distributed.

Important: If the drawer moves with difficulty or the rollers are damaged, it may be advisable to replace them specifically. IKEA carries spare parts, and such repairs are usually straightforward.

Summary: Clean, lubricate with silicone-based product, test. If that doesn’t help, check for mechanical damage. Good luck!

It is especially important here to carefully check whether the plastic rollers of the IKEA Metod drawers still run smoothly. These rollers often tend to deform slightly or even develop cracks through use, which can cause noise.

To check this thoroughly, I recommend removing the drawer completely and disassembling the tracks as far as possible. Some models allow you to remove the rollers. If that is the case, you should examine them carefully and replace them with original spare parts if necessary.

For lubrication, it is best to use a silicone-based spray, as Nofege already mentioned. Be careful not to spray the tracks excessively—excess lubricant can get onto the inside surfaces of the drawer and attract dirt.

If the squeaking persists, it might also be caused by contact between the metal guide and the wood. In such cases, inserting thin felt or rubber strips at the contact points can help avoid hard friction.

One question for you: When opening the drawer, do you hear a cracking sound or more of a continuous squeaking? This will help narrow down the source of the problem further.

Thank you for the detailed explanation, TEBILO. It is actually more of a continuous squeak when pulling and closing the drawer, rather than a single crack. The rollers seem to turn, but I haven’t been able to remove them yet, as I’m unsure how to do so properly without disassembling the whole drawer.

I will definitely try that, since I had previously tested a home remedy with oil that seemed to attract more dirt instead. What has been your experience with attaching felt or rubber strips to the drawer wheels or slides? Does that actually make a lasting difference against the squeaking?
