Hello everyone, I am planning to assemble an IKEA Brimnes wardrobe and have some concerns about the quality and durability of the screws provided. Therefore, my question is: Which screws are best suited for the IKEA Brimnes wardrobe, especially if you prioritize stability and long-lasting performance? I would like to know whether it is advisable to use the original screws or if it is better to choose different types of screws (e.g., stainless steel screws, particleboard screws). Any advice on dimensions, materials, and load-bearing capacity would also be helpful. Thank you in advance!

For the Brimnes wardrobe, chipboard screws with a diameter of 4 mm (0.16 inches) and a length of about 30-40 mm (1.2-1.6 inches) are suitable. Stainless steel is strong and rust-resistant, making it a good choice. The original screws are usually sufficient, but if you want extra security, opt for higher-quality ones.

Hey! I would also recommend using stainless steel chipboard screws – they are durable and hold the wooden parts together very well. If you plan to place the cabinet in more humid rooms, stainless steel screws are a real lifesaver 😉. Just invest a bit more upfront, and you’ll have long-lasting peace of mind.

To choose the best screws for the IKEA Brimnes cabinet, you should first consider the material structure of its components: the Brimnes is mostly made of particleboard with a melamine coating. Coarse-thread particleboard screws provide the best hold here, as the coarse threading is specifically designed to ensure the necessary load capacity for particleboard.

I recommend stainless steel screws (A2 or preferably A4) with a length between 35 and 40 mm (1.4 and 1.6 inches) and a diameter of 4–5 mm (0.16–0.20 inches). The stainless steel material reduces corrosion risk and thus extends the lifespan of the fasteners, especially in areas with fluctuating indoor humidity.

When installing, screws should not be countersunk too deeply, nor tightened too firmly, to avoid damaging the material. Applying some wax or oil to the screw ends can also make driving them in easier and protect the material.

Please also indicate whether the cabinet will be subjected to heavier loads (e.g., as a bookshelf) or if the screws are mainly for standard household use, so I can offer more specific recommendations if needed.

Thank you for the detailed response! The cabinet will be used mainly for clothing and occasionally for some books. I value a solid fixing because I often move the cabinet around. The load is therefore moderate, but stability is important.

For the intended use you described (clothing, occasional books, frequent rearranging), I recommend stainless steel chipboard screws approximately 4 x 40 mm (5/32 x 1 5/8 inches), as previously mentioned.

- Stainless steel provides corrosion resistance
- The 40 mm (1 5/8 inches) length ensures secure anchoring without breakthrough
- The coarse thread is important for chipboard

Additionally, it is advisable to choose screws with a countersunk head so that they sit flush with the material and do not damage the surface. Avoid screws made of soft metal at all costs, as they can break or tear out more easily.
