Hello everyone, some time ago I bought an Ikea Besta shelving unit and I want to take good care of it so that the surface keeps its appearance for as long as possible. My question is: What is the best way to clean and maintain the surface of the Ikea Besta without damaging the material or finish? I am especially interested in tips on which cleaning products or home remedies are suitable, whether I should avoid aggressive cleaners, and how often it makes sense to clean it. Additionally, I would like to know if there are any recommendations for special care products or sealants that can be applied to the surface, particularly for the high-gloss or matte finish options. Thanks in advance for your experience and advice!

In general, a damp microfiber cloth is sufficient. For heavier dirt, use a mild dish detergent and avoid aggressive cleaners. Do not use abrasive cleaning agents that may cause scratches.

There are some clear recommendations for surface care of Ikea Besta:
- Use only lukewarm water with a few drops of neutral dish soap.
- Avoid alcohol, solvents, or cleaners containing ammonia, as these can damage the paint layer.
- Soft, lint-free cloths (e.g., microfiber cloths) are suitable for cleaning.
- Avoid abrasive cleaners, as they can cause permanent surface damage.
- For high-gloss fronts, special furniture polish products that do not contain silicones are recommended.

Regular maintenance every 1 to 2 weeks, depending on use, is advisable to prevent dust and fingerprints.

I can confirm the advice to use mild cleaning agents. Especially for lacquered surfaces from the Besta system, Ikea itself recommends avoiding harsh cleaners. Additionally, I suggest removing stains promptly, as stubborn dirt can damage the surface. As part of the maintenance routine, I occasionally use a mild furniture polish specifically designed for lacquered finishes. In general, continuous moisture on the surface should be avoided.

That's an important tip, thank you! Could you specifically say something about microfiber cloths? I've heard that not all are equally good. Are there certain qualities or brands that work better for Besta? And what about the application – should they be used damp or wet?

Microfiber cloths with a fine, soft texture are generally very suitable. It is important that they are clean and free of dirt particles, as these could cause scratches. Brand-name quality is often a good indicator, but even good no-name products usually serve their purpose well.

The cloth should be well wrung out, so only damp. Cleaning when wet is not ideal because too much water can get into the edges. Afterwards, polish the surface with a dry microfiber cloth to avoid water spots.
