Hello everyone,

I have been experiencing an issue with the hinges on my IKEA Malm furniture for some time now, where some of them have become quite loose. My question is: why do the Malm hinges become loose over time? Specifically, the doors no longer fit tightly and feel somewhat wobbly. Are there known design weaknesses, material fatigue, or is this simply normal for this model? I would appreciate a detailed explanation of the possible reasons and any sustainable solutions to address this.

The hinges usually loosen due to the constant stress from opening and closing. Simply tighten the screws to make the doors firm again.

Hello,

First of all, it is normal for hinges—especially on frequently used cabinets—to become a bit loose over time. The Malm series uses simple but functional metal hinges secured with screws.

Common reasons for loose hinges:

1. Screws loosen due to vibrations and movement.
2. The material around the screws deteriorates or becomes porous.
3. Moisture can cause particle boards to swell, reducing the holding strength.

My advice: Completely unscrew the hinges, clean the wood threads, and if necessary, reinforce them with wood glue or small wooden dowels. Then carefully tighten the screws again. This will improve the stability in the long run.

Hey, I know that! My hinges also became loose after opening my Malm cabinet several times. I just tightened the screws, and now everything is rock solid again 🙂 It’s really easy to do, so just go for it and don’t worry! Keep it up ;-)

Often the screws are just loose. Tightening them with a screwdriver is usually enough. If that doesn’t work, check whether the screws still have a good grip in the wood.

Thank you for the quick responses!

@refinar: Your explanation makes sense, especially the point about the wooden threads and material fatigue.

I have retightened the screws several times, sometimes even using a bit of force, but the problem keeps coming back.

Could this be a common weak point in the Malm series, perhaps a design decision by IKEA related to the thin wood and cost-effective construction? Or is the everyday use causing more stress compared to other furniture? Has anyone here ever tried to claim a warranty or repair from IKEA for this issue?
