ᐅ Are there installation guides available for complex Malm models?

KolilaHello everyone,
I am currently exploring advanced installation methods for Malm components, specifically the models with built-in storage solutions and the XL versions. While I am familiar with the standard instructions, I encounter difficulties with some of the more complex versions that involve more intricate connectors or combine different material thicknesses.
My question is: Are there any specialized or extended installation guides available for the more challenging Malm variants that specifically address these additional complexities? I would appreciate any recommendations for official or user-created manuals.
Thanks in advance for your feedback!

Hello Kolila,
I can understand your challenge well. The Malm series is versatile, but the XL models or those with integrated storage systems do come with certain complications. In my experience, the standard assembly instructions usually cover only the basic steps and do not address material adjustments or different types of screws.
My advice: Pay close attention to the labels on each component and document every type of screw and its position during assembly. Especially hidden connections or small dowels can cause confusion with the extended models.
Regarding special instructions: Besides IKEA’s own resources, you can find tutorials on YouTube from experienced assemblers that cover the more difficult versions. However, I recommend checking carefully whether these versions exactly match your model, as small differences can easily lead to errors.
What specific issues are you facing? Maybe I can help if you briefly explain where you are stuck.

This is exactly my point: There are no official extended instructions, and the YouTube videos are only somewhat helpful because the solutions often seem improvised. Specifically, I have problems fitting the side metal brackets and the rear strip on the larger version with the drawer organizer. The parts don’t always fit together perfectly, which causes distortion when tightening the screws.
Maybe you or someone else here has a tip on how to safely manage these critical steps? Even small tricks on how to pre-adjust or align the parts would be great.
I always wonder why IKEA doesn’t provide better, more detailed assembly instructions for these models.
This seems like a marketing mistake. Those assembling the furniture invest time, patience, and sometimes cleverness. Why is it suddenly expected that people improvise or rely on online solutions?
Perhaps what we really need isn’t new instructions, but a fundamental design change that brings these "difficult variants" down to a more manageable level. In my opinion, if new features are added, the documentation should be updated accordingly and not done half-heartedly.

Hello everyone,
I’m happy to share a brief assembly guide based on my experience with the more complex Malm versions:
1. First, sort all parts by screw types and labels so you can quickly find what you need during assembly.
2. For the side metal brackets, I recommend initially tightening the screws only by hand—not fully tightened. This way, you can easily adjust them later and avoid stress in the structure.
3. Attach the rear wall battens loosely at first—use a spirit level to check their alignment. If you notice any warping, loosening the battens slightly and fully tightening them only after fixing the metal brackets often helps.
4. Make sure the drawer slides fit correctly into the guide rails; otherwise, mechanical stresses can occur, causing the drawer fronts to jam.
One more tip: small rubber buffers between the metal brackets and wood can absorb tension. This goes beyond the standard assembly but can be very helpful when the fit is tight.
I hope this helps! Feel free to ask if you have any specific questions.
