Hello everyone,

I have a drawer in my Ikea Besta furniture that is unfortunately damaged. There is a break on the front panel of the drawer, which is made of particleboard, and now the drawer sticks when opening and closing. My question is: What is the fastest and easiest way to repair this damaged drawer without having to replace the entire drawer or the cabinet? I would like to know which tools and materials I should use, what to pay attention to during the repair, and if there are any tips to restore the drawer’s stability. I would be very grateful for concrete and practical advice!

Hello Manuel0,

your situation sounds really frustrating – I once had almost the same problem with one of my IKEA drawers, and it’s really upsetting when a piece of furniture just stops working as it used to.

What helped me back then was first thoroughly cleaning the damaged area and removing any loose parts. After that, I used regular wood glue to fix the break and clamped the drawer with screw clamps for a while. Honestly, I wasn’t sure if it would hold, but it worked surprisingly well. Then I attached a few small metal brackets on the inside to provide extra stability.

The whole process is quite quick, and you don’t need any special tools – just wood glue, screw clamps (or clamps), and brackets (available cheaply at hardware stores).

I understand that you might wonder if you have to replace the entire cabinet – believe me, that’s not necessary. If you want, I can also explain exactly where I placed the brackets.

Best regards and good luck with the repair!

This is a very important step that should not be underestimated. If the break is not properly prepared, even the best glue will not hold.

Additionally, I recommend the following procedure for repairing an Ikea Besta drawer:

- Remove the drawer completely from the furniture and place it on a flat surface
- Carefully sand all broken edges with sandpaper to improve glue adhesion
- Apply wood glue generously and press the parts firmly together
- Hold them in place or clamp with screw clamps for at least one hour (preferably longer)
- Afterwards, for added stability, use metal brackets or small wooden dowels. A drill and a cordless screwdriver are helpful for this
- If a screw might damage the surface, pre-drill small holes to prevent the wood from splitting

Manuel0, it would also be a good idea to check carefully whether other parts of the drawer or the sliding mechanisms (rails) are damaged. Sometimes it just sticks because a rail is bent or a drawer is not properly fitted.

If you have any further questions, I’m happy to help!

Manuel0,

your best option:
- use wood glue
- clamp or fix the break with clamps
- screw metal brackets on the inside
- check the rail, lubricate if necessary

This may take about 30 minutes plus drying time. This way, the drawer will hold again.

That’s a good question, as looking for replacements often takes a lot of time and money.

My advice: If the drawer front is broken, a repair using a strong wood glue and reinforcement with small screws or brackets on the inside is often worthwhile. Also, use a waterproof wood glue, since the drawer fronts are sometimes covered with a foil that can reduce adhesion.

When screwing, careful pre-drilling is important to avoid damaging the material. Make sure to realign the drawer properly afterward so it slides smoothly again.

If the drawer bottom is also damaged, you can reinforce it by gluing thin plywood panels underneath.

In summary: repair with wood glue, clamps, metal brackets, optionally a drill and cordless screwdriver, and careful pre-drilling. This usually works quickly and effectively.
