ᐅ My KALLAX becomes even less stable each time I move it – is that normal?

I have the following issue with my KALLAX shelving unit from IKEA: Every time I move or rearrange the unit, it becomes noticeably less stable. It wobbles more, feels shakier, and I have to realign it more often. I have tried tightening the screws again and made sure that none of the shelves are bent. Still, the problem persists.
My question is: Is it normal for a KALLAX to feel less stable after each move? Or is there perhaps a trick to maintaining its stability over the long term? I mainly use the unit for books and a few decorative items, so it should be load-bearing enough.
I would appreciate any detailed advice, especially if you have experience with how to permanently prevent such an issue.

Is it normal for a KALLAX to feel less stable after each time it’s moved? The KALLAX is generally a relatively sturdy system, but its stability largely depends on how it is assembled and secured. When you move the shelving unit multiple times, the joints (especially the connection of the back panel and the base supports) can loosen slightly, which may increase wobbling.
How are the back panels attached in your case? Some users underestimate their importance for stability. I also recommend tightening all connections after each repositioning and properly adjusting the leveling feet, if available.
Additionally, uneven flooring can worsen the problem—check whether the unit is standing on a firm and level surface. If the shelving is on laminate or hardwood floors, small unevenness can easily cause rocking.
In summary: a slight loss of stability after moving is not unusual, but readjusting and retightening should restore stability.

I tried tightening the screws again and made sure that none of the shelves were warped. To add: KALLAX units are not screwed together but are mainly stabilized by the groove joint between the side panels and the back panel. A common mistake is that the back panel is not properly or only loosely installed, which greatly reduces stability.
The back panel is essential for the shelf’s lateral stiffness. If the unit is frequently moved, this should always be checked and securely fixed. Unfortunately, the original back panel sometimes tends to loosen, especially when it is just slotted in.
If your back panel is already somewhat damaged or warped, that would explain the wobbly feeling. An alternative solution could be to use corner brackets, which significantly increase stability, even though they are minimally visible.
Another critical factor is the surface on which the shelf stands. Unstable or uneven flooring greatly increases wobbling.

A slight loss of stability after moving is not unusualThat's true, I’ve experienced that as well. My advice: The KALLAX isn’t designed to be moved every few weeks like a piece of furniture on casters. Once it’s placed, let it settle a bit – in other words, try not to pull out the ‘root system’ (or rather the back panel) too often. 😉
It also helps to lean the shelf against the wall and use small spacers in between – this provides extra support without having to screw it in permanently.
And if you’re feeling adventurous, try applying a thin layer of silicone under the shelf. This reduces slipping and the risk of wobbling.
With a bit of care and patience, your KALLAX will handle moves without turning into a wobble-prone piece of furniture. 🙂
