Hello everyone,
I recently assembled a Kallax shelving unit at home and noticed that the edges of the shelves are quite sharp. Especially the lower edges of the shelves seem like they could easily cause minor injuries if touched while vacuuming or by accidentally bumping into them.
I’m wondering if anyone has experience or recommendations on how to effectively and permanently soften these sharp edges. I have considered various solutions, such as plastic edge protectors, thin felt strips, or even lightly sanding the edges, but I’m unsure how practical or lasting these methods are.
Does anyone have a proven method that works particularly well for Kallax shelves?
Thanks in advance for your tips!

the edges of the shelf are quite sharpI can understand that. Kallax shelves are made of particle board with a melamine coating, which can make the cut edges particularly hard and sharp.
It is advisable to attach edge protectors made of plastic or rubber, which are specifically designed for furniture edges. These provide protection against injuries and are durable.
If the shelf is against an additional work surface, fine sandpaper (grit 240 or finer) can also be used to slightly deburr the edges without damaging the surface.
Alternatively, felt strips are a simple solution, but they mainly provide light cushioning rather than softening the cut edge itself.
My recommendation: install edge protection and, if necessary, slightly sand the edges beforehand.
I would like to add a brief guide on how to safely soften the sharp edges of a Kallax shelf:
1. First, make sure the edges are thoroughly cleaned so that no dirt interferes during sanding or gluing.
2. Sanding: Use sandpaper with a grit of 240 to 320 to gently round off the sharp edges. Important: Do not sand too aggressively to avoid damaging the melamine coating.
3. Apply edge protectors: There are self-adhesive edge protectors made of plastic or rubber that can simply be pressed along the edges. It is worthwhile to cut the protectors to the correct length beforehand.
4. Additional protection: If the edges will be subjected to frequent use, consider adding felt strips or soft rubber covers.
5. Check: After installation, inspect everything for loose parts and fix as needed.
Common mistakes include sanding too roughly, which affects the shelf’s appearance, or using cheap plastic edge protectors that break or come loose quickly.
My conclusion: The best solution for a Kallax shelf is a combination of light deburring through sanding and high-quality edge protection.

Sometimes, it is enough that the edges don’t look too damaged, so the solutions suggested by Rodolfo or REPITAR are indeed useful.

For anyone unsure: there are also special edge protector strips available in various colors, so they can visually blend well with the shelf.
Anyone with children at home should definitely consider these measures. An uncomfortable piece of furniture doesn’t leave a good impression. 🙂
