Hello everyone, I would like to use this thread to discuss and gather experiences on the topic: How can the IKEA Pax wardrobe system be customized with paint finishes? Specifically, I am interested in which methods and materials work best to paint the large surfaces of the doors and sides cleanly, durably, and as professionally as possible. This includes questions about surface preparation, types of paint (spray, rollers, brushes), possible paint types (acrylic, alkyd, etc.), and how to best protect surrounding areas or whether it is advisable to completely disassemble the individual parts. I look forward to your tips, experiences, and any warnings about potential pitfalls.

The best approach is to unscrew the doors, sand them down, and then spray them with a primer. After that, use an acrylic or synthetic resin spray paint. Important: ensure good ventilation and apply several thin coats. This way, the paint will adhere well and look neat.

Cool project! 😊 Always lightly sand the surface first; this makes the paint more absorbent. I find spray paints really practical because they allow you to reach corners precisely and give a very smooth finish. And hey, masking tape can be annoying, but it saves a lot of hassle with paint splatters later on. Ideally, take the doors off – that makes it really fun and lets you get creative!

Hello KANUMO, I would like to add that not every surface is equally suitable for applying paint. The PAX doors are usually made of coated MDF or particleboard, which provides a smooth, non-porous surface. Therefore, careful sanding with fine sandpaper (grit 220) is very important to help the paint adhere better. Additionally, I recommend using a special primer designed for plastic-coated surfaces, as standard primers often fail. A clean workspace and dust-free conditions significantly improve the results. If you disassemble the individual parts, you can paint both the doors and the carcases, which greatly increases your options for customization.

Here is a brief guide on how to professionally repaint PAX doors:

- Preparation: Remove the doors and take off the handles.
- Sand the surface using approximately 220-grit sandpaper.
- Apply a special primer or adhesion promoter designed for melamine or synthetic resin surfaces.
- Allow to dry.
- Use water-based paint or synthetic resin paint; spray cans are practical for an even application.
- Apply several thin layers, lightly sanding between each coat.
- A clear coat can be applied at the end to make the surface more resistant and durable.

Common mistakes include applying paint too thickly, which leads to runs, or insufficient surface preparation. Also, make sure there is adequate ventilation! Feel free to ask if you have any questions.

That’s an important point. It’s also worth considering whether a paint finish is really better in the long run compared to alternative options like vinyl wraps or chalkboard paint. Painted finishes often look more refined but require more careful preparation and maintenance.

I’m also wondering how durable such paint finishes are with frequent use of PAX wardrobes. Does anyone have long-term experience? Ideally, it should be possible to easily touch up the doors later without having to sand down the entire surface again.
