ᐅ Are there upgrades available for IKEA Besta furniture to enhance its durability?

Iker5Hello everyone,
I am currently considering ways to make my IKEA Besta furniture more durable, as I have noticed in the past that while these smart storage systems are convenient, they often show weaknesses under heavy use that increase wear and tear. My question is: Are there specific upgrades or modifications for IKEA Besta furniture that can actually help extend their lifespan?
I am less interested in entirely new furniture and more in technical improvements such as reinforced fittings, better materials for shelves, or perhaps optimized shelf inserts that can support more weight. Has anyone had experience with such “reinforcements” or knows practical ways to make Besta components more robust over time?
Additionally, it would be interesting to hear if there are recommendations to prevent common weak points, for example in screw fixings or hinges. Looking forward to your tips and suggestions!

I’m thinking less about entirely new furniture and more about technical improvements like reinforced fittings, better materials for shelves, or maybe optimized shelf inserts that can support more weight. That’s a very good approach. Here’s an overview of what has proven effective:
- Screws & fasteners: IKEA often uses basic particleboard screws. For greater stability, you can switch to high-quality wood screws or screws with a larger diameter. Make sure they are suitable for the material and that the drill holes don’t splinter.
- Shelves: Besta shelves are often made from coated particleboard with a thickness of 16 mm (0.63 inches). Upgrading to 18 or 22 mm (0.71 or 0.87 inches) MDF or plywood shelves can significantly improve load capacity and durability. Depending on how they will be used, you can either seal or laminate the surface.
- Hinges and fittings: There are also metal fittings from third-party suppliers that are sturdier than the original ones.
- Assembly: An important but often underestimated point – the furniture should always be properly aligned and not overloaded, otherwise screws may loosen and the material can deform.
If you want, I can write a short guide later on how to better reinforce Besta systems.
Best regards!

Screws & fasteners: IKEA often uses basic chipboard screws. For greater stability, you can switch to high-quality wood screws or screws with a larger diameter. This is a crucial point that I would like to elaborate on. Chipboard screws are generally designed for softer materials and tend to loosen when furniture is heavily loaded. In detail, I would recommend something like the following:
- Use galvanized or stainless steel wood screws, which offer better corrosion resistance.
- If possible, use metal connectors or angle brackets to reinforce the joints.
- Another technical improvement is so-called dowel connection systems, which combine strength and reversibility.
Additionally:
- The shelves in Besta units are often prone to bending and sagging. To avoid this weak spot, you can either use higher-density MDF or add extra reinforcements under the shelves.
- If you want to replace the hinges, check compatibility with the drilling height beforehand, as many alternative hinges sit slightly lower.
A small extra tip: You can also extend the lifespan by applying protective measures, such as protecting the furniture from moisture and regularly checking the screws.
Do you have a specific setup or load where these weak points become especially noticeable? Then more targeted advice could be offered.
