I am currently planning to assemble a complete Ikea Platsa system for my living room and would like to know how long the assembly of such a system usually takes. I am particularly interested in the actual installation time, meaning the time required to put the modules together, secure them to the wall, and organize the contents, excluding any prior planning or preparation such as sorting parts or preparing tools.
Are there any experiences regarding how many hours one should expect for a medium-sized Platsa wall unit with about 4 modules, doors, and drawers?
I look forward to your insights and, if possible, tips for an efficient approach.

how long the assembly of such a system usually takesThat depends a lot on your experience with furniture assembly, the tools you have, and the complexity of the chosen modules. I’ll share my experience structured into three phases:
- Preparation: sorting parts, getting tools ready (about 30-45 minutes)
- Assembling the modules: screwing the side panels, attaching back panels, inserting shelves (about 1.5-2 hours for 4 modules)
- Installing doors/drawers and securing the unit to the wall (about 45 minutes to 1 hour)
In total, you can expect around 3-4 hours if everything goes smoothly and you have some practice.
Common time-consuming mistakes:
- Missing or incorrectly sorted parts
- Confusing screws and fittings
- Inaccurate alignment of the components
My advice: work step-by-step following the instructions and avoid assembling several modules simultaneously if you are using the system for the first time.

If you are working in an apartment with concrete walls and have the appropriate anchors and drill bits, progress can be relatively fast. For drywall, you should consider using special cavity anchors, which also take a bit more time to install.
Also:
- Make sure to measure the modules precisely and plan their arrangement before assembly. This saves rework.
- Prepare all screws and fittings sorted in advance to speed up the assembly.
For the complete assembly including preparation (if you are building the system for the first time), I would plan at least 4 hours, preferably more.
If you are working alone, allow for even more time compared to working with two or three people.
