Hello everyone, I am currently planning to assemble a large Pax wardrobe system from IKEA and would like to know how much time one should realistically allocate for this. Specifically, it involves a combination of several units placed side by side, including doors, shelves, and possibly drawers. I have some experience with furniture assembly, but Pax is known to be quite extensive and sometimes a bit tricky. What is a realistic time frame to complete the full assembly of such a large wardrobe system when working with two people? Are there differences depending on the configuration? Thank you in advance for your insights!

Hello BLAMAN, your question is very well formulated and important because the assembly time for large Pax systems is often underestimated. Of course, it depends heavily on the exact size of the wardrobe system and the options you choose – doors, drawers, interior fittings.

From my experience, assembling a large Pax combination usually takes between 6 and 10 hours when two people work together. Here are some key points:

- Preparing and sorting the parts can take about 1-2 hours.
- Assembling the carcasses: around 1.5 to 2 hours per module.
- Installing the doors including adjustment can take another 1-2 hours.

It’s also important to allow enough time for fine adjustments and minor issues since the instructions are not always straightforward and screws can sometimes be difficult to fasten. If you are a beginner, it can definitely take longer. The important thing is to strictly follow the sequence and carefully check the fittings.

I hope this helps as a guideline for you!

Usually, two people with some basic DIY skills can finish in about 8 hours. Don’t forget to include breaks and sorting. If doors with soft-close mechanisms are involved, it will take a bit longer.

Hello BLAMAN, to answer your question in detail, I would like to provide you with a small step-by-step guide on how to structure the assembly and what to watch out for to keep the schedule realistic.

1. Sort and check parts: Take your time to inspect all the carcass panels, screws, and fittings first – this can take 30 to 45 minutes with large wardrobe units but can prevent a lot of trouble later on.

2. Build the carcasses: Depending on the size, it’s best to assemble each module one at a time and screw them together completely. Plan about 1.5 to 2 hours per carcass, which can be faster if you have experience.

3. Connect the individual elements: The connections between the carcasses, for example with connector fittings, need to be done precisely. This requires additional time; otherwise, the entire wall can quickly go out of alignment.

4. Install the doors: If your Pax wall has sliding or hinged doors, allow at least 1 to 2 hours. Doors often require fine adjustment, especially if soft-close hinges are used.

5. Install the interior fittings: Shelves, drawers, and clothing rails come last. You can plan another 1 to 2 hours for this.

In summary, for a large Pax wardrobe system of 2 to 3 modules, you should expect to spend between 6 and 10 hours, as klo61 already mentioned. Important: Don’t forget breaks, as your concentration will otherwise quickly decline.

Tip: If possible, work carefully with a spirit level, especially when connecting the carcasses, to avoid problems during installation.

About 7 to 9 hours for two people to assemble a large built-in wardrobe, including doors and drawers. This assumes you are familiar with the instructions and have some basic DIY skills.

Thanks, klo61, that already helps me a lot. What do you mean by "per module"? Are you referring to each individual cabinet carcass unit? I have planned a wall unit made of three large Pax units, each about 100cm (40 inches) wide.

That makes sense. I was worried that alignment could become an issue quickly when connecting several large elements.

Can anyone share from personal experience how much time the doors with soft-close hinges usually take? Is it several extra hours or only about 30 to 60 minutes per door?
