Hello everyone,

Some time ago, I bought a few Billy shelves from IKEA and now I want to clean them properly without damaging the surface. I understand that most Billy shelves are made of particleboard with a thin melamine or foil coating, which can be sensitive to harsh cleaners or excessive moisture.

My specific questions are:
  1. What cleaning agents can I use to clean the Billy shelves without causing the surface to become dull or damaged?
  2. Are there any special cleaning methods or tools that work particularly well?
  3. Should I use wet wipes, microfiber cloths, a sponge, or even a specialized product?
  4. What is the best way to deal with stubborn dirt or dust in the corners and edges?
I want to avoid the surface swelling, becoming rough, or losing its shine.

I look forward to your experiences and tips, thanks in advance!

Hello ERDAL56,

your question about the proper cleaning of Billy shelves is really important because the surfaces on IKEA furniture are often delicate. Essentially, you can use a soft microfiber cloth that is only slightly damp. Please avoid using large amounts of water!

For cleaning, it is better to use lukewarm water with a drop of mild dish soap. Important: after cleaning, always wipe the surface dry with a cloth to prevent moisture from soaking in.

For stubborn dirt, you can try diluted isopropyl alcohol, but never spray it directly onto the surface; instead, moisten the cloth with it.

Avoid abrasive cleaners and harsh chemicals, as they can damage the paint or laminate. It is worthwhile to clean the shelves gently on a regular basis to prevent dirt from building up.

For corners, a soft toothbrush is recommended to reach into the joints without scratching. This way your shelves will stay looking good for a long time.

Exactly, here’s a tip: it’s important to use a clean cloth because coarse dirt trapped in the cloth can scratch the surface.

I also recommend very mild cleaning agents, ideally avoiding chemical cleaners, as these can quickly damage foil coatings.

For light dirt, you can use lukewarm water with a little vinegar essence; this cleans well and is gentler than many other substances.

As ERDAL56 already mentioned, it’s important that moisture does not remain on the surface for long. Therefore, after wiping, dry the shelf thoroughly.

You should try to remove dust regularly with a dry microfiber cloth. This prevents dirt from settling firmly.

A small practical note from my experience: The Billy shelves are usually coated with a film, which makes them somewhat sensitive to moisture.

For stains, I avoid aggressive or abrasive cleaners, as they can dull the surface.

A reliable tip is to clean with a damp cloth lightly moistened with a mild all-purpose cleaner if necessary—but really only a small amount. Always dry the surface afterward to protect it.

If there are residues of glue or sticker stains, rubbing alcohol or a special adhesive remover that is non-abrasive works well. Always test first in an inconspicuous area!

Another tip: For corners and edges, I recommend using a small, soft brush or an old toothbrush or bristle brush to avoid scrubbing too hard and damaging the surface.

Slightly dampen the microfiber cloth; do not use strong chemicals.

A mild soapy solution is completely sufficient for everyday use.

Be sure to dry thoroughly after wiping; do not leave water standing.

It is best to use warm water with a small amount of dish soap and a microfiber cloth.

Sweeping or scrubbing while wet is not recommended, as it can damage the surface over time.

Use an old brush for corners, which also helps remove dust residues.
