Luku65Hello everyone,
I am currently considering how to enhance the appearance of my IKEA Besta system without having to buy completely new furniture. I am especially interested in using wooden trim and various decorative elements because I value natural materials and a cozy atmosphere.
I am particularly curious about how wooden trim can be used to create accents – for example, on edges, fronts, or perhaps as dividing strips. Which types of wood are recommended to complement the typical Besta surfaces well? And what about practical implementation: Should I use glue, screws, or would mounting adhesive be better?
Additionally, I am open to creative decoration ideas that don’t look too overwhelming but still give the furniture a special touch. Maybe there are also tips on colors or suitable combinations to complete the look.
In short: How can I visually upgrade IKEA Besta with wooden trim and decorative elements so that it looks elegant, high-quality, and personal? I’m really looking forward to your suggestions and experiences!

Wood strips are best fixed with construction adhesive, as this usually holds better and looks cleaner than screws.
For wood types, light woods such as beech or oak are good choices because they appear neutral and elegant.
Keep decorative elements simple – small plants or high-quality ceramics work well.

I think this whole discussion about how to “upgrade” the BESTA is mostly just an excuse to make cheap furniture look more expensive. Wood trims? Sure, they can enhance the appearance. But why not just go for higher-quality furniture in the first place?
If you really want to tinker with the wooden accents on a budget piece, my advice is to keep it simple and use real natural wood. But honestly, this is more for fans of DIY and minimalist design, not for everyone.
What kind of decoration?! Why bother at all? The furniture should stand on its own and not pretend to be something else with decoration.

For attachment, I recommend wood glue combined with fine nails to achieve a durable yet discreet connection. Before applying, sand the strips carefully to ensure a smooth surface.
Regarding decorative elements: minimalist, geometric shapes in metal or ceramic combined with a few selected plants create a tidy and elegant atmosphere. It is important not to overload the surfaces of the BESTA in order to maintain the clean lines.

Just a casual thought: Wooden slats give the BESTA system a really nice, warm touch! ✨
My tip: Make sure the slats aren’t too wide – 1.5 to 2 cm (0.6 to 0.8 inches) is enough, otherwise it can look bulky. You can also slightly round the edges, which feels more high-quality afterwards.
Decoration? A bit of greenery in small pots or a few minimalist candle holders instantly add coziness. And hey, less is often more – you really can’t go wrong with Scandinavian style! 😉
