ᐅ Kallax Doors Hard to Open After Painting – What Can Help?

Hello everyone, I recently fitted new doors on my Kallax shelves and painted them myself. However, after painting, the doors have become noticeably harder to open and close. It seems the hinges are now too tight or slightly sticking, making the doors less smooth to operate. I suspect that the paint is affecting the movement or perhaps the hinges are sticking or being obstructed by the paint.
Does anyone have experience with Kallax doors after painting? What steps can help to make the doors operate smoothly again without having to completely readjust them or damage the paint? Are there specific painting techniques to consider to avoid these issues? Thanks in advance for any advice!

Is fine steel wool suitable for this, or is it better to avoid metal? Metal abrasive materials like steel wool are not suitable for hinges because they can scratch the surface and potentially promote corrosion. It is better to use non-metallic fine sandpaper (around 400-600 grit) or special plastic abrasive pads.

Is dry lubricant a standard recommendation? Yes, dry lubricants are commonly used in the plastics and furniture industries because they are non-sticky and do not attract dust particles. Especially for plastic hinges, oil can otherwise cause contamination.
In addition to the previous answers, I would like to explain the process of painting Kallax doors in more detail to clearly understand the causes:
When painting, the surface volume changes slightly, especially with multiple coats. A common misconception is that paint stays perfectly smooth, but even with thin layers, the paint can swell at edges.
This is particularly noticeable at the cutouts for hinges. If these areas are not masked or left free, paint settles into minimal gaps and improves adhesion where movement is necessary.
The plastic core of the doors can slightly swell if water-based paint is used and paint penetrates, which worsens the fit.
My recommendation:
- Remove the doors completely before painting.
- Remove hinges or at least cover them carefully.
- Lightly sand edges and adjoining surfaces and use a primer.
- Apply thin, multiple coats.
- After drying, mechanically smooth the contact areas selectively (e.g., with a very fine sanding sponge).
Question for Viktorin34: Which type of paint did you use, and how many coats were applied? Was the paint water-based or solvent-based?

Remove doors completely and take off hingesI removed the doors, but the hinges are fixed because I used the original Kallax soft-close hinges, which are not easy to detach.
That probably explains why the hinges got some paint on them during painting and are now stiff to operate.

Soft-close hinges, not easily removableThis is important information. Soft-close hinges are often more sensitive to paint buildup because they contain small damping elements and precisely moving parts.
In this case, you can proceed as follows:
1. Remove the doors.
2. Carefully remove paint residues from the hinges using a fine brush or toothpick, taking care not to damage the hinge mechanism housing.
3. Then, apply a dry lubricant (no oil!) to the joints.
4. Open and close the doors several times to help evenly distribute the lubricant.
Do not attempt to use sandpaper on the hinges, as this may damage the mechanism.

However, this only applies if the hinges are made of stainless steel or coated metal. This method is not recommended for plastic parts.
Afterwards, thorough drying is important before applying the dry lubricant.
