Hello everyone, I have a few IKEA BESTÅ cabinet doors that, after some time, no longer align perfectly. The doors stick a bit or don’t close flush, even though they were installed correctly during assembly. Are there any tips or proven methods here in the forum for readjusting the doors to align them properly again? I’m especially interested in how to adjust the hinges correctly without damaging the doors or the surface. Thanks for your advice!

What type of doors did you install exactly?

Thank you for asking. I installed classic wooden doors painted in matte white. The hinges are the standard type that came with the delivery. The doors are slightly misaligned – the gap between the doors is wider at the bottom than at the top. I believe this is due to some unevenness in height or lateral adjustment. I can rule out the frame being warped after measuring; it is straight. Is there anything I should watch out for before adjusting to avoid accidentally compromising the stability of the hinges?

This is important information because many issues with misalignment actually originate from the cabinet. For the classic matte white wooden doors and standard BESTÅ hinges, I recommend the following:

- Check the screws on the hinge itself to ensure they are all tight but not overtightened.
- Start with the vertical adjustment on the rear screw: adjust in small increments, closing and checking the door each time.
- Then adjust the side screw until the gaps are even.
- The latch is controlled by the small screw on the hinge arm. If the door is already closing well, only make minor adjustments here.

If the door still sticks heavily after adjustment, I also recommend lightly lubricating the hinges, for example with a silicone spray, to improve movement without affecting the procedure.

That’s a good question. Basically, you should only turn the screws as much as necessary to fix the issue. A common mistake is to loosen the screws and over-adjust, which can cause the hinge to lose its load-bearing capacity.

My advice: always make small adjustments and after each change, lift or press the door to check if everything is still firmly in place. If the attachment to the cabinet or frame itself is loose, you should repair that first— for example, with wood glue or larger screws— before realigning the door. This will help prevent long-term stability problems with the doors.

Maybe as an additional tip: If you’re unsure, you can secure the screws with a small piece of PTFE tape or a drop of clear varnish on the thread ends. This way, they are less likely to loosen during use. 👍

And yes, always turn them in small increments – it might feel a bit slow sometimes, but it often helps prevent frustration. Perhaps keep in mind that the doors will be used every day in the end, so it’s worth being careful.
