Hello everyone,

I have been wondering why some doors, especially on the Billy shelf unit, squeak daily, even though they don’t seem to be directly damaged by external factors. I suspect it might be related to the hinges or the material properties, but I would like a precise explanation.

Could it be due to the paint or moisture, or perhaps the stress from opening and closing?
I’m particularly interested in why the squeaking occurs so frequently with these doors and why it cannot be fixed simply by oiling them once.

From your experience, what causes can you identify, and what would be the best solution to permanently prevent the daily squeaking?

Most of the time, the issue is with the hinges not being properly lubricated. Just apply a little silicone spray or sewing machine oil, and the squeaking should stop.

That is often the case. The Billy cabinet doors often have simple, thin hinges that dry out more quickly with regular use.

Additionally, small deposits or dust can accumulate, which then amplify the noise. Regular cleaning and lubricating the hinges with a suitable oil can really help and prevent constant squeaking.

Just be careful not to use oil that is too thick, as it can become sticky and attract dirt.

In addition to the previous answers, I would like to add that besides the lubricant, the quality of the hinges also plays an important role. Cheap models tend to squeak more often because the bearing points are manufactured with less precision.

It can also be worthwhile to check that the hinges are securely fitted, as both too loose or too tight installation can cause noise.

With prolonged use, the frame material may also settle slightly, which can lead to increased friction at certain points.

Thanks for the addition, that explains a lot. I had already suspected that loose parts might be a factor.

Is there a specific type of lubricant that is particularly recommended for these thin hinges?

And could high humidity cause the material to swell, making the squeaking worse? Or is that more of a myth?

For the hinges of the Billy door, I recommend a light machine oil or silicone spray. Both penetrate well into the bearings and help prevent dust buildup.

Yes, moisture can cause MDF or particleboard panels, like those used in furniture such as Billy, to swell. This can create tension and lead to additional friction.

This explains why squeaking occurs more frequently and intensely on some doors in more humid rooms.
