Hello everyone, I am planning to install IKEA Metod kitchen cabinets with sliding doors in my kitchen in the most space-saving way possible. My specific question is: How can I build the cabinets with sliding doors to maximize space gain without compromising the stability or functionality of the sliding doors? Are there particular assembly steps or tips to consider for optimal use of the installation space, especially when space is limited in height and width? I have read that sliding doors sometimes need to be mounted differently than regular doors, and I want to approach this as systematically as possible. I would appreciate detailed experiences and advice, including on choosing the right sliding door variants for Metod. Thanks in advance!

First of all, it is important to understand which sliding door options IKEA offers for the Metod system and how they are constructed. The sliding doors suitable for Metod usually come as front-mounted sliding doors or as frame constructions with tracks on the top and bottom. A tip in advance: the tracks require their own space, which affects the width of each cabinet.

To make the best use of space, I recommend first checking the hinges and doors carefully for their projection. Regular doors need swing space, which sliding doors eliminate. However, you still need to allow for the distance between the tracks and the outer edge of the cabinet carcass to avoid friction or jamming.

My advice is to align the cabinets as precisely as possible and adjust the tracks before the final installation of the doors. Make sure the tracks run parallel to each other to ensure smooth door movement. Also, ensure the cabinet sides are perfectly vertical, as even a slight tilt combined with sliding doors can quickly cause the doors to get stuck.

Can you share some information about the spatial conditions? How much height and width is available? Are there ceilings or walls that need to be accounted for? This will help find the best sliding door solutions.

Thanks for the follow-up. The kitchen wall in question is 240 cm (94 inches) wide and 210 cm (83 inches) high for use. The ceiling is standard height, and the cabinets will be installed on the floor without a base frame and not attached to the ceiling. There are walls on both the left and right ends, so the cabinets need to fit exactly between these walls. I have targeted a cabinet depth of 60 cm (24 inches), which is often the standard for Metod. For the doors, I was thinking of sliding doors with two tracks, which might offer the maximum space-saving. However, I have doubts whether there will be too much gap or tolerance left at the top because of the height.

For those looking to install sliding doors on Metod cabinets in a space-saving way, here is a guide with important tips—ideal if you follow the specified dimensions and conditions.

- First: Measure the exact width between the walls—in this case, 240 cm (95 inches). Take into account the width of the tracks to ensure the doors slide smoothly.
- Position the cabinets: For example, you can place four cabinets of 60 cm (24 inches) each side by side, which equals 240 cm (95 inches) without gaps.
- Important tip for the tracks: Attach the bottom tracks first, making sure they are perfectly level, then install the top tracks exactly parallel to them.
- Allow for tolerances: Leave a gap of about 2–3 mm (0.08–0.12 inches) between the tracks and the doors—too tight and the doors will scrape; too wide and they will rattle.
- For the height: With 210 cm (83 inches) there is space for standard wall cabinets, but for base cabinets plus sliding doors, you need to carefully measure the running mechanisms and door height to prevent scraping on the floor or jamming at the ceiling.
- Avoid overloading the doors; this can stress the tracks over time.

Summary: Precise measurements, accurate installation of the tracks with consistent parallel gaps, and high-quality sliding door tracks for Metod cabinets. If you want, I can also explain the installation steps for the sliding door profiles themselves.

Exactly, this is one of the more subtle but crucial points when building with sliding doors. Especially with Metod, you’re dealing with relatively heavy doors. If the clearance is off, the ease of use immediately suffers.

Additionally, depending on the sliding door model (e.g., glass, wood, framed), the weight varies, which also affects the load on the tracks. Some designs also require side panels or internal partitions within the cabinet to guide the doors and prevent jamming. This also saves space by avoiding the swing radius of conventional doors.

It’s also important to firmly screw the floor and ceiling tracks in place and ensure the screws are not too loose, as this can cause misalignment.

For maximum space efficiency, a good tip is to size the door height so that the tracks are positioned close to the top and bottom edges. But not so close that the doors scrape against the floor or ceiling. A clearance of about 5 mm (0.2 inches) is recommended here.

As an addition: For Metod cabinets with sliding doors, it is important to pay attention to the sliding door hardware. The systems IKEA provides for Metod are usually based on top and bottom running tracks, which ensure stability and prevent the doors from misaligning.

Avoid installing doors that run only on the top track, as these are more prone to jamming.

For installation, keep in mind:
- Correct alignment of the cabinets on both floor and ceiling, which should be level and solid.
- Check the dimensional accuracy of the doors before installation.
- Install the cabinets with small expansion gaps (about 3 mm (1/8 inch)) against walls and ceilings to allow for material expansion due to temperature changes.

Sliding doors are an excellent solution for tight spaces because traditional doors (including folding doors) often require more clearance to open.

In summary: Pay attention to the proper selection of the running tracks and tolerances, measure and re-measure beforehand, and work precisely during installation.
