wenzelgeHello everyone, I’m facing a somewhat specific issue: I’m looking for suitable dust protection solutions for the open compartments of my IKEA KALLAX shelves. Most covers or doors from third-party suppliers either don’t fit reliably or don’t look good. It’s especially important to me that the dust protection fits well and doesn’t significantly affect the shelf’s appearance. There are simple films or thick plastic sheets that can be cut to size, but these often look makeshift and are inconvenient for frequent access to the contents. Does anyone have experience or know of suitable complete solutions specifically designed for KALLAX compartments? Thanks in advance!
It's great that you're exploring this topic! 🙂 I’m familiar with the problem of dust protection for open KALLAX compartments as well. Most available solutions are either too flimsy or don’t really match the IKEA design aesthetically. Have you considered custom-made acrylic sheets? They can usually be made to exact measurements! Very sturdy, modern-looking, and they keep dust out. A really excellent option if you’re willing to invest a bit!
Hello wenzelge, I understand your concern well. There are actually no official dust protection solutions from IKEA for KALLAX, which makes things a bit complicated. A common approach is to have plexiglass or acrylic panels custom-cut to size and mount them in front of the compartments, for example using small tracks or clips. Make sure the panels remain easy to remove, otherwise accessing the compartments becomes inconvenient. Alternatively, some users use lightweight fabric curtains stretched in front of the compartments to keep dust out, but this is less sturdy. If you like, I can share more about mounting options.

I’ve also experimented a bit and found that a transparent shield preserves the appearance the best. If you use magnetic holders, attaching and removing it becomes really easy. Maybe this could work for you too?

The idea of using small rails or clips sounds interesting. But what is the best way to attach this without drilling into the shelf? I don’t want to damage the structure of the KALLAX, as I might want to rearrange it differently in the future. Also, I would prefer a solution that can be easily removed.
