I recently started assembling Ikea Metod kitchen cabinets and noticed the many different types of screws included. My question is: which screws are the most important for Ikea Metod?

I am especially interested in knowing which types of screws are essential for the stability of the cabinets and for attaching the hinges. It would also be helpful to know if there are any screws that should preferably be replaced or that are subject to increased wear with frequent use.

Looking forward to your experiences!

The most important screws are definitely the chipboard screws for the carcasses and the screws for the hinges. Without these, nothing holds together properly.

In general, when assembling Ikea Metod cabinets, special attention should be paid to two types of screws:

- The chipboard screws, usually 3.5 x 16 or 3.5 x 30 mm (0.14 x 0.63 or 0.14 x 1.18 inches), which are crucial for holding the cabinet parts together. It is important to screw them in straight and firmly, but not overtighten, to avoid damaging the material.

- The screws for the hinges (usually 4 mm diameter, 0.16 inches) significantly contribute to the stability of the door attachment. For cabinets that are opened frequently, it is advisable to check these screws regularly and tighten them if necessary.

Missing or incorrectly used screws in these areas can quickly lead to wobbly furniture or loose doors.

Interesting point, but I think this standard answer falls short. What about the cam screws that connect the parts? Without them, the whole thing is at best a fragile construction.

And honestly: Many underestimate how much the quality and strength of these connector screws affect the long-term stability. My advice: If you want something truly durable, invest in high-quality replacement screws, not just the standard IKEA ones.

I can understand how confusing the variety of screws can be. When I first assembled my Metod kitchen, I was also unsure and often asked questions.

What helped me was focusing on the load-bearing parts: the particle board screws and the cam lock screws are really crucial for achieving a stable piece of furniture. When readjusting the hinges, you need to be careful to avoid stripping the screws – that’s something I’ve learned over time.

It makes sense to occasionally tighten the screws in stressed areas and handle the doors gently to prevent anything from becoming loose.

That's a good point. I’m curious if anyone has experience replacing these cam screws with higher-quality alternatives. Is it really worth it in terms of stability and durability, or is it mostly unnecessary?

Also, are there common mistakes beginners make with particle board screws, such as driving them in too deep and causing material damage?
