Hello everyone, I recently bought an IKEA Brimnes shelving unit and plan to secure the shelves in a way that is as stable and strong as possible. The included brackets are simple but a bit wobbly for my needs, especially when stacking heavy books or larger items on them. My question is: What methods or additional fasteners would you recommend to securely attach the shelves in the IKEA Brimnes shelving unit? I am open to tips on screws, wall plugs (anchors), connectors, or other practical solutions. Are there any tricks or modifications that go beyond the standard assembly instructions but work really well based on your experience? Thanks in advance for your input!

My question: What specific loads do you plan to place on the shelves? Books, decorations, electronics? And how flexible are you with renovation work?

Thank you for the detailed reply, Johnathon. Most of my shelves will be loaded with books, partly 10-15 kg per shelf (22-33 lbs), sometimes even more. That means stability is very important to me. In addition, there are also electronic devices that are not necessarily heavy but are sensitive. Regarding renovation work: I can live with some adjustments or fine-tuning, but I don’t want to have to keep screwing things in all the time. That’s why I thought there must be a reliable long-term solution. Is there anything to consider regarding screw or anchor types beyond the standard recommendations?

With this kind of load, I would definitely recommend small metal brackets, as mentioned. Another option would be to screw narrow wooden battens underneath the shelves, fixed to the side panels – this distributes the weight much better. And be sure to secure everything to the wall! The feeling that something might tip over is very unsettling.

Using appropriate metal brackets and wall anchors will definitely ensure safety. For screws, it is best to use wood screws with full threading for a strong hold. Plastic anchors are suitable, but I recommend nylon anchors for better grip.

One more technical tip: If you drill the holes for the screws yourself, do so slowly and use a suitable drill bit to avoid damaging the material. Also, use washers under the screw heads, as this can prevent stress damage to the surface of the shelves. Have you ever considered reinforcing the front edge of the shelves with a thin metal strip? This can help prevent them from bending under heavy loads.

If you use the shelves as heavy load bearers, you could design them completely differently.

Sure, but then it wouldn’t really be Ikea-style anymore! 😄 Jokes aside, I like the idea of working with wooden strips. It also looks good if done neatly. I would also recommend adding non-slip pads to the bottom of the shelf in case the unit shifts and puts pressure on the shelves inside. Safety first, without having to become a heavy-duty DIYer!
