I am currently organizing my small home workshop and have been considering whether IKEA Hemnes shelves could serve as a storage and organization solution in this setting. My main question is: Can IKEA HEMNES shelves, which are originally designed for living spaces, be used practically and effectively for workshop organization? I am particularly interested in aspects such as stability, adaptability, storage capacity, and the ability to store tools and small parts in an organized and secure way. Has anyone had experience using these shelves in a similar environment or can explain the advantages and disadvantages in more detail? Additionally, it would be helpful to know how the HEMNES series compares to other shelving solutions in terms of load capacity and modularity, especially under workshop conditions.

IKEA HEMNES shelves can certainly be used for workshop organization, but with clear limitations. The shelves are made of solid wood, which provides better stability compared to particleboard furniture. However, they are not designed for heavy loads typically found in workshops, such as heavy tools or machinery.

They are suitable for light to medium-weight items, as the shelves are generally strong enough and the open design allows for good visibility. The downside is the fixed division of the compartments—unlike modular workshop shelving, the shelves are often not height-adjustable or easily customizable, which limits flexibility.

Alternatively, the shelves can be combined with boxes or containers to neatly store small parts. A recommended approach is to use HEMNES for organizing small to medium items clearly, alongside more robust metal shelving units for heavier loads.

Of course, you can use them—who wouldn’t want a bit of stylish living room atmosphere in the workshop? But let’s be realistic: the HEMNES series is not an industrial product. Solid wood sounds great, but the wood is relatively soft—exposure to moisture or oil stains can damage the material.

Additionally, the shelves are not designed to withstand the typical wear and tear of a workshop environment. I really wonder why someone wouldn’t invest directly in professional workshop furniture if durability matters to them.

Another point is adjustability—fixed compartments and limited flexibility for modifications. This might work for hobbyists, but professionals are likely to find it restrictive.

HEMNES shelves are sturdy enough to hold tools but not heavy machinery or large metal parts. They work well for small screws and accessories. However, the adjustable shelves cannot be moved much.

For a closer look at the suitability of IKEA HEMNES shelves for workshop organization, here is a brief analysis:

- Material: Solid wood, which looks appealing and feels sturdy, but can deteriorate over time with exposure to oil, moisture, and dust in a workshop environment.
- Load Capacity: IKEA shelves are designed for approximately 30kg (66 lbs) load per shelf. This is sufficient for light hand tools, small parts, and low loads.
- Adjustability: The shelves have fixed shelves with limited height adjustment, which restricts flexibility for items of varying sizes in the workshop.
- Modularity: Not comparable to professional workshop shelving systems, which often feature perforated panels and additional accessories for customization.

Common mistakes when using these shelves in a workshop:
- Overloading with heavy tools can cause bending or damage.
- Moisture damage from oil or water without proper protection.

Conclusion: For a hobby workshop mainly with light tools and small parts, HEMNES can be an acceptable solution—provided the shelves are not overloaded and are placed in a clean, dry location.

That’s an interesting point. I had also considered complementing the HEMNES shelves with storage boxes. What box sizes or types would you recommend to achieve the best fit between the shelf and the box? Are there, for example, specific storage containers that match well in depth and height with the shelves to maximize organization and ease of access?

One more question: Does anyone know of special protective treatments (such as varnish or coating) that can be applied to the shelves to make them more resistant to typical workshop wear and tear?
