LobokauHello everyone,
I have several Billy shelves from IKEA that I would like to modernize in appearance, as their classic white or birch veneer now looks a bit outdated. I am particularly interested in which methods and materials are best suited to update the surface and overall look to be more contemporary—without compromising stability and functionality. I’m open to suggestions such as painting, laminating, modifications, or even combinations with other furniture or decorative elements. It would also be helpful if you could share experiences with durable and low-maintenance solutions that can be done without professional workshop equipment. Who has practical tips or proven projects? Thanks in advance!

Hello Lobokau,
to give Billy shelves a modern look, it’s important to first consider which style you want to achieve. Do you prefer a minimalist, Scandinavian, or industrial design? The approach will vary depending on the goal.
A very common and effective method is sanding the surface and repainting with a high-quality, matte or satin finish paint. I recommend using a primer, as the wood or particle board can otherwise absorb the paint unevenly. Also, I suggest sanding with grit between 120 and 220 to create a smooth surface.
Alternatively, you can use adhesive films—such as matte or textured vinyl wraps designed specifically for furniture. One important tip: make sure to cut the edges very precisely and press them down firmly, or the films might peel off quickly.
For a more modern appearance, decorative elements like metal handles in brushed stainless steel or black are helpful and easy to replace. If you have some DIY skills, you can also add glass or wooden panels as doors or install LED strips under the shelves.
One more question: do you already have a color scheme or material preferences? That way, I can offer more targeted advice.

It’s great that you want to upgrade your Billy shelves! 🙂 A fantastic idea is to paint them in a dark anthracite or black color – it looks very modern and sophisticated. I did this at home and combined it with some stylish metal handles, which really adds style to the living room! Additionally, you could add a few decorative elements made of metal or glass to take the look to the next level. Don’t be discouraged – even small changes can make a big difference! 🙂

It’s great that you want to upgrade your Billy shelves! 🙂I think it’s fantastic that you’re taking this on. I know it can be frustrating when you’re not exactly sure how everything will fit together in the end. If you ever feel uncertain, just ask. I recently refurbished similar furniture myself and understand how much preparation is sometimes needed – but it’s definitely worth it. :-)
A question for everyone: How durable are adhesive films in everyday use? I want to avoid them peeling off after a short time, especially on shelves that are used frequently.
Good morning everyone,
Regarding the question about the durability of films: it largely depends on the quality of the film and the surface treatment of the substrate. A clean, grease-free surface is crucial, and light sanding improves adhesion. High-quality furniture films (e.g., from 3M or Oracal) can last a very long time; in addition, clear protective coatings or sealants help to further extend their lifespan.
When painting, it is best to apply several thin layers with sanding in between; this makes the surface more resistant. Personally, I also recommend water-based acrylic paints for living areas, as they produce less odor and fewer harmful substances.
If anyone is interested, I can gladly provide a step-by-step guide on how to professionally prepare and paint a Billy bookshelf.
