Ke-devin6128 Apr 2023 14:37Hello everyone, I am currently planning my new kitchen and want to build an Ikea Metod kitchen island with integrated storage myself. My goal is to make the island not only visually appealing but, above all, practical with plenty of storage tailored to my needs.
I am particularly interested in the following points:
- Which Metod units are best suited for a kitchen island primarily designed for storage?
- Are there any special considerations regarding stability or construction when combining multiple cabinets to use as an island?
- How have you optimized the storage space in your kitchen island (e.g., internal drawers, drawer organizers, doors)?
- Do you need additional reinforcements or special connectors to build a stable and durable kitchen island?
I appreciate practical tips, personal experiences, and of course advice on what to avoid. Thanks in advance!

My goal is not only to make the island visually appealing but also especially practical with plenty of storage spaceThat is an important approach since the combination of functionality and stability is crucial, especially for kitchen islands. Here is a structured approach to building your Metod kitchen island:
- First, choose cabinets that connect well together. For storage, base cabinets with drawers are highly recommended because they allow better organization and are more accessible than cabinets with doors only.
- Make sure to use not only the standard Metod connectors but also so-called cross braces. These horizontal supports provide additional stability to the entire island.
- Assembly works best on a level surface to avoid any stress or warping.
Regarding storage: you can flexibly use inner drawers and drawer inserts, but keep in mind that Ikea offers various modular inserts to neatly sort knives, spices, or pots. Plan the drawer depth carefully to make the most of the storage space.
Finally, I recommend securely attaching the countertop to the cabinets. The countertop should be firmly fixed and, if necessary, reinforced from underneath.
Do you already have specific dimensions or layouts in mind?

Are there any special considerations regarding stability or construction when joining multiple cabinets together to use as an island?Yes, that is an important point. When used as an island, the cabinets are usually freestanding, meaning they do not receive support from adjacent walls. Therefore, you should pay attention to the following:
- Always use sturdy connectors between the individual Metod cabinet modules. Ikea provides special fasteners designed to securely connect the modules.
- Reinforce the structure with additional cross braces or support panels if the island has a larger surface area or will be heavily loaded.
- The countertop should also be continuously secured and reinforced, especially if it extends beyond the cabinet frames.
The legs should provide a stable base that distributes the weight evenly and prevents wobbling. Rubber pads under the feet help avoid slipping.
For concrete floors or tiles, it is advisable to place a sliding protective layer (e.g., felt pads) under the island to prevent floor damage.
If the island offers a lot of storage, the stability of the individual cabinets becomes particularly important. The cabinets’ maximum load limits should not be exceeded.
How large is your kitchen island planned to be? Do you already have plans for the countertop choice?

The standard connectors between the cabinets are usually enough to secure them, but especially for longer islands, additional brackets fixed vertically can be very helpful.
- I recommend securing the countertop before transport and before final installation. You need to work very precisely here, as the entire stability depends on it.
- For storage space, it is worth investing in internal drawers and pull-out baskets, especially if you want to store a lot of kitchen appliance accessories.
If you plan to integrate electrical appliances such as a cooktop or sink into the island, make sure to sort out the installation of connections early. Sometimes the inside of the cabinet needs to be modified accordingly.
What is your level of DIY skill? Is it sufficient for building yourself, or would you rather consider additional help from professional tradespeople?
