ᐅ Kallax not suitable for tall storage boxes – any alternatives?

BulebuHello everyone,
I’m considering expanding my storage with the IKEA Kallax shelving unit, but I’ve run into a problem, especially with taller boxes: while the Kallax is very versatile, I’ve heard and experienced that it doesn’t seem ideal for boxes with greater height. Both stability and appearance appear to suffer.
I’m curious if others have noticed the same and what alternatives you would recommend for storing very tall boxes or large containers. Are there better shelving systems or practical solutions that offer similar flexibility but greater durability?
I would appreciate any experiences, tips, and possibly information about prices or build quality. Thanks in advance!

The Kallax is very flexible, but I have heard and experienced myself that it doesn’t seem to be ideal for boxes with greater height.I can absolutely understand that and would like to go into a bit more detail here.
The Kallax shelving unit is basically a very stable and well-designed system for cubic storage. However, the compartment spacing is optimized for a standard height of just under 33 cm (13 inches), which is ideal for small to medium-sized boxes. Taller or larger boxes often cannot fit flush or securely inside because the top panel does not align with the box, resulting in small gaps that affect both the appearance and stability.
Another issue arises from the load: taller boxes put more leverage stress on the shelf corners and joints. If these boxes are also filled with heavy contents, the stability can suffer if the shelf is not appropriately reinforced.
As an alternative, you could either opt for larger modular systems with adjustable compartment heights, for example from manufacturers like String, or look at shelves with adjustable shelves that you can adapt to the box height. Steel or metal shelving often offers more flexibility in shelf heights and resists bending under heavy loads, but their appearance is different and often less cozy for residential use.
I would like to know: What box dimensions or approximate heights do you have in mind? And how heavy is the load? This information helps to recommend suitable alternatives.
Hey Bulebu!
I can only agree with danial60. Kallax is really a great all-rounder, but if you want to squeeze in very tall boxes, it can definitely reach its limits. 😅
I personally have tried the combination of Kallax with some cool, stackable plastic containers. It looks nice and is easy to maintain, but the shelf just isn’t designed for very tall items.
One alternative I can recommend is these flexible metal shelving units that can be adjusted in height. They are sturdy, don’t look as cozy, but are super durable and versatile! Or take a look at USM Haller, which is basically the premium option for modular shelving systems if the budget allows.
If it’s about storing things you want to access quickly, I also love open shelves with wide boards. They look somehow lighter than having many boxes inside 🙂
Good luck, you’ll find something that fits!

Alternatively, you can opt for larger modular systems with adjustable shelf heightsExactly. Kallax is great for bulky items, but for tall boxes it's better to choose a shelf with adjustable shelves.
Metal shelving units are sturdy and flexible, and wooden shelves with adjustable heights are also recommended.
Just take the dimensions of the boxes and look for shelves with suitable interior heights.
Hello Bulebu!
That sounds like an exciting project, and yes, I know the feeling when you have great speakers but the shelving just doesn’t cooperate! 😄
I think it’s great that you’re focusing on quality and appearance. For me, I switched from the Kallax to modular wooden shelves with adjustable shelves. You can customize them individually, and they look really nice. The flexibility is really enjoyable!
If you’re interested, check out shelving systems like Montana or String – they’re a bit more expensive but very versatile and high-quality. You can even add doors or drawers, which makes the whole setup more durable.
Don’t get discouraged; with the right solution, you’ll really enjoy it for a long time! 🙂

Or take a look at USM Haller, which is basically the premium option for adjustable shelving systemsUSM Haller is really a good choice, especially if you want durable and very stable furniture. Thanks to its modular design, you can set the shelf heights completely individually – ideal for tall boxes or more specific dimensions.
If the budget is a bit tighter, there are more affordable alternatives often referred to as "metal bolt shelving" or "workshop shelving." While these are usually not as stylish as Kallax, they offer maximum flexibility in height.
If you like the Kallax system, you can also modify it by adding extra shelves or foldable boxes, but this can eventually become quite complicated and less stable compared to adjustable shelving.
If you have specific measurements or load requirements, I’m happy to help you choose!
