Hello everyone, I’m looking for effective, child-safe solutions to secure the doors of the IKEA BESTÅ system. Our little explorers often find it too tempting to open the cabinets, which is not only annoying but can also be dangerous. We need a way to lock the doors so they remain inaccessible to toddlers without relying on complicated tools or causing permanent damage. Does anyone have experience or specific recommendations on what works best for the BESTÅ doors? Thanks in advance for the tips!

Hello Luana39, your question is very practical, and I can offer some tips. First, it is important to know which type of doors you have on your BESTÅ unit – glass, high-gloss lacquer, or wood decor. This affects the options for installing mechanical or magnetic locks.

For mechanical locks such as child safety locks with latches, I recommend installing them firmly but reversibly – that is, using screws in existing or concealed pre-drilled holes. Since the particleboard is usually quite thin, anchors can become loose quickly.

Another option is self-adhesive magnetic locks. They work like this:
- A magnetic catch is attached inside the cabinet body
- From outside, a matching magnetic key is needed to open the door
- This option avoids damaging the door front.

For all types, please consider the age of your children carefully, as some locks may not be secure enough for very young children because they can be opened by pressing or levering.

Question: How old are your children and how dexterous are they already? This helps to recommend truly suitable products.

Clasp or magnetic fasteners work best. They are easy to install, usually without drilling. However, make sure they meet certified child safety standards.

Hi, I installed magnetic locks from a well-known manufacturer in our house. They are great because you can just walk by with a small magnetic key, and the door opens – no fiddling around. For kids, the doors are really secure. And don’t worry, they don’t look bulky but fit well with the minimalist BESTÅ design. 😊

I find this question essential because the safety requirements differ significantly when comparing, for example, a 1-year-old to a 4-year-old. For the latter, simple latch locks may no longer be secure enough, as they can quickly figure out how the mechanisms work.

Another point is the ease of installation. Even magnetic locks can damage surfaces if the adhesive doesn’t hold or leaves residue. It’s important to choose high-quality products or consider alternative solutions, such as installing child safety devices on the inside of the door where they are not visible.

Hello everyone, I would like to mention that there are also simple clamp locks available that do not require screws but still provide a certain level of security. These work by attaching them to the cabinet frame or door, and they automatically snap shut when closed. They are generally safer for younger children than having no locking mechanism at all, although older children can often figure out how to open them quickly.

Additionally, I recommend using hard-to-reach or higher shelves whenever possible to store particularly dangerous or fragile items out of reach.
