Hello everyone,

I am currently planning to modify an Ikea Besta shelving unit to create a wine rack. I want to not only adjust its appearance but also optimize it functionally for storing wine bottles. My questions are:

- What should be considered regarding load capacity and stability when using shelves for wine bottles?
- What options are there for storing wine bottles safely and space-efficiently (e.g., angled positions, holders)?
- How does air circulation and temperature affect the setup, especially if the rack is placed in a living area?
- Are there any recommendations for materials that are better suited for the conversion to avoid moisture damage?

I look forward to your experiences and ideas, especially if you have completed a similar project with the Besta. Thanks in advance!

Stability is important, especially for heavy bottles. Reinforce the storage unit with additional angle brackets and use sturdy shelves made of thick wood or metal.

For storage, I recommend angled holders that secure the bottles. An open design or ventilation slots help with air circulation.

Avoid moisture-sensitive materials, as the wood can swell. Paint or sealant is advisable.

The Besta shelving system is not originally designed for point loads such as bottles, so I recommend adding extra cross braces or metal brackets to increase its load-bearing capacity. The shelves should be at least 18 mm (0.7 inches) thick, ideally made of solid wood or plywood.

Storing the bottles at an angle is ideal, as it keeps the cork in contact with the wine, preserving its quality. Modular wine rack inserts that can be fitted into the shelving, or custom-made individual holders from wood or metal, work well for this purpose.

How about air circulation and temperature, especially if the shelf is placed in a living area?

Wine should be stored in a cool, dark place with a stable temperature. Besta shelves offer little insulation, so the storage location should be chosen carefully. Avoid placing the shelf directly near radiators or in sunny spots. Air circulation can be improved by keeping the back open or using ventilation slats.

Are there recommendations on which materials are better suited during remodeling to prevent moisture damage?

Synthetic resin coatings or oil treatments can be helpful. Materials like plywood or MDF with moisture protection perform better than simple particle board. Avoid direct contact with water.

In summary: reinforcing the structure, choosing suitable wood types, using adapted holders for bottle storage, monitoring the ambient temperature, and protecting against moisture are important factors when converting a Besta shelf into a wine rack.

An angled storage is ideal because the bottles stay in contact with the cork, which preserves the quality of the wine.

Absolutely right! And here’s a little tip from me: if you want a bit more style, you can also integrate small LED strips with warm lighting. It looks cool and adds a great atmosphere to your living room – without affecting the wine.

Just make sure no direct sunlight hits the bottles, as that’s a definite no-go. Regarding temperature, I’d also try not to place the shelf near heat sources or windows.

Oh, and for stability: if the shelf might tip over, secure it to the wall. Otherwise, it can topple backward when you remove bottles. Safety first! 😉

Overall: enjoy your renovation – wine and DIY go perfectly together!
