damian8Hello everyone,
I am planning to assemble my Ikea Platsa wardrobe soon and want to be better prepared this time to ensure the assembly goes as smoothly as possible. Therefore, I have the following questions: Which tools are absolutely necessary to assemble the PLATSA correctly and efficiently? I am interested both in the standard tools that every household should have and in any special tools that could improve the handling and stability of the wardrobe.
Of course, Ikea often includes some suitable tools, but I would like to know if it makes sense to have additional tools like a cordless drill, spirit level, or similar on hand. Tips on tools that people often forget but turn out to be important later would also be very helpful.
It is also important for me to know if there are any special requirements when securing the PLATSA to the wall, or if the usual furniture assembly tools are sufficient for that.
I look forward to your experiences and recommendations!

Although Ikea often includes a small hex key, it’s usually not enough if you have many parts and want to work quickly. A good spirit level is also recommended to ensure the cabinet elements and especially the wall mounting are perfectly level.
A pencil and a tape measure are also helpful to mark drilling positions and alignment accurately. If you want to attach the PLATSA to the wall, you will need a drill appropriate for the wall material (e.g., brick, concrete, drywall) and suitable anchors and screws.
I also suggest having a clamp or a helper to stabilize the parts during assembly – this makes the process much easier, especially with larger elements.
In summary, I would recommend this list:
- Cordless drill + Phillips bit
- Spirit level
- Tape measure
- Pencil
- Drill + anchors + screws (for wall)
- Optional: clamp or helper
With these tools, you should be well prepared to assemble everything quickly and precisely.
I think it’s completely understandable to want to be well informed in advance about which tools are absolutely necessary. This helps avoid frustration and unnecessary back and forth later on.
I fully agree; the cordless screwdriver was a game changer for me as well. The first time, I only had a small Allen key, and progress was really slow.
What I’d like to add: For example, I had too little light at my place, so I placed a small, flexible work lamp on a shelf to better see where I was screwing – that helped a lot. Also, I sometimes had trouble fitting the back panels properly, where a small rubber mallet can be useful to avoid damaging the surface.
How about you, do you already have some tools at home, or would this be your first piece of furniture assembly with so many parts?

As an addition, I would like to offer precise tips based on the material and construction method of PLATSA:
The screws are designed for wood, so be sure to use a Phillips PH2 screwdriver bit to avoid damaging the screw heads. Using a bit that is too large or too small can cause stripping, which may lead to problems with many screws.
For wall mounting, a hammer drill is recommended if the wall is made of concrete or brick. For drywall (plasterboard) walls, special cavity anchors are essential to ensure load capacity. Additionally, the spacing of the mounting points on the wall should be considered in relation to the PLATSA system to distribute the load evenly.
A cleaning cloth to remove dust after drilling should also be on hand to ensure the anchors hold properly.
Do not rely on the quality of the tools included by Ikea. They are intended for absolute emergencies, but having your own cordless drill greatly improves convenience for assemblies of this size.

You can assemble the PLATSA with a simple Phillips screwdriver, but using a cordless drill will be much faster.
For wall mounting: a drill with appropriate anchors is essential. I also recommend a spirit level, as most Ikea cabinet units often end up slightly crooked without it.
If you don’t have a rubber mallet, you can use a piece of wood to protect delicate surfaces when tapping parts into place.
Other than that, you don’t need much more.
