Good evening everyone, I have a problem with my IKEA Malm furniture: the drawers keep opening by themselves or sliding open uncontrollably. This is not only annoying but also dangerous, especially when there are small children in the house. So my main question is: how can I prevent Malm furniture drawers from opening on their own? Are there any special tricks you can recommend, or particular safety devices that are easy to install? I would appreciate any tips and experiences that can help solve this issue permanently.

It’s simple: buy drawer locks or child safety locks and install them. Alternatively, you can place non-slip mats inside or secure the drawers with some wedge-shaped material.

Haha, I know that feeling all too well! These Malm furniture pieces seem almost alive, like they want to make the drawers dance at night 😄. But seriously, a simple solution is to attach small rubber bumpers or silicone stoppers to the drawer slides. They soften the closing and prevent the drawers from popping open. Additionally, proper drawer stops ensure a secure hold and stop the drawer from opening by itself. If you have curious children, I also recommend IKEA’s lockable child safety devices—they’re quick to install and very practical 🙂

Hello foki47, I can understand your problem well, as many Malm drawers tend to open by themselves due to tension or uneven weight distribution. In general, it is advisable to first check whether the drawers are installed correctly, as improper installation can contribute to this effect.

Another option is to use special drawer stoppers or magnetic catches, which are available from hardware stores. These can be easily installed and keep the drawer securely closed in any position. Attaching self-adhesive anti-slip strips to the bottom of the drawer can also help improve stability.

Additionally, make sure the weight inside the drawer is evenly distributed and that no excessively heavy items are placed at the front, as this makes it easier for the drawer to tip open.

If you have children in the household, locking cabinet safety devices can also be useful to prevent anything from opening unintentionally. I hope these tips are helpful!

Hello again, I would like to go into this topic in more detail and provide you with a small guide on how to approach the problem systematically:

1. Check the installation height and alignment of the drawers: Some Malm models are sensitive to minimal deviations. A spirit level can be helpful here.

2. Inspect whether the sliding mechanism or rails are clean and free of obstructions. A common cause of drawers popping open is jammed rails.

3. Install magnetic or spring stoppers: These are inexpensive and easy to fit. They ensure a secure closure.

4. Use non-slip liners on the drawer base: These reduce movement of items and help to minimize uneven loading.

5. If child safety is a concern: special locking catches are also available with lockable mechanisms that prevent small children from easily opening the drawers.

One common mistake is setting the drawer to run too smoothly or positioning the stoppers incorrectly. When fitting, make sure to adjust the closures so they are neither too loose nor too tight.

I hope this structured approach helps you!
