ᐅ How do I build an IKEA Metod kitchen with additional countertop space?

Hello everyone,

I am currently planning the installation of my new Ikea Metod kitchen and have a specific challenge: I want to add an extra countertop that not only matches the kitchen visually but is also ergonomically practical.

Therefore, my question is: What is the best way to build an Ikea Metod kitchen with an additional countertop area? Which modules and constructions are suitable to create extra workspace and possibly space for appliances or a small breakfast nook? Are there any tips for stable assemblies or smart extensions using the Metod base cabinets and countertops?

I already have the standard base cabinets and wall cabinets, but I want to significantly extend the countertop area, possibly as a corner setup or as an island connected to the existing run.

I would greatly appreciate any helpful advice, including on fastening materials or screw connections!

Thank you for the previous responses!

@Brian: Your advice on stability is very helpful. I am actually planning a combined solution – an extension of the countertop along the wall plus a small kitchen island that can also serve as a breakfast nook. The island should be as stable as possible but not too bulky, since the space is limited.

@Samuel: Your tip about metal supports sounds interesting. Are there specific products for that, or do you have to improvise yourself?

I’m still unsure whether to use Metod frames for the island or a more affordable standalone solution.

I also don’t know yet how to attach the countertop as easily and securely as possible without it slipping or becoming unstable over time.

Are there any clamping methods or screws you would recommend?

Hello Fusan,

for installing the countertop on Metod cabinets, I often use the Ikea original "countertop fasteners," which are small metal clips attached to the sides of the cabinets.

This prevents any lifting or shifting, and you can still remove the countertop later if needed.

Metal supports are available as steel or aluminum profiles at hardware stores; simply screw them under the countertop at unloaded points to prevent sagging.

Also, plan carefully how you will cover the island, as the backside should look neat if it stands free in the room.

I love getting creative with projects like this! You might consider adding an extra work surface with a fold-out or pull-out function – it saves space and is very practical.

For example, a countertop that can be pulled out or folded up as needed fits perfectly with a Metod base construction and is easy to implement. Especially in a small room, this way you can make much better use of the space!

A bit of courage for unconventional solutions really pays off 😉

Fusan, use screws for countertops that are slightly thicker for fastening. Ikea offers suitable sets. For the kitchen island: make sure to firmly secure the legs, otherwise everything will wobble.

Thanks, that sounds exactly like a solution I want to try. Do you have a recommendation on the best position to attach the fasteners (height, distance between them) for a stable support, especially when the countertop overhangs on the island?

I’m also leaning toward a fixed surface, but I like the idea of a foldable or pull-out mechanism in case I need more flexibility in daily use.

That makes sense. Are there adjustable feet available to compensate for uneven floors?

Hello Fusan,

for securing the countertops, place fasteners at least every 60-70 cm (24-28 inches), preferably attached to the load-bearing parts of the Metod cabinets, such as the sides and the back.

If the countertop overhangs on one side, it is important to add extra supports there, like short legs or metal brackets.

Ikea offers adjustable furniture feet, which are ideal for uneven floors. These allow you to precisely level the kitchen island and ensure it stands stable.
