Hello everyone,
I noticed that several drawer handles on my Ikea Malm chest of drawers are damaged—some are broken or worn out, making the drawers difficult to open. Since I want to replace the handles, I’m wondering: What is the proper way to change defective Malm drawer handles?
I’m particularly interested in the best procedure, the tools required, and whether it’s necessary to use original replacement handles from Ikea or if alternatives will fit. Are there any special considerations during installation to avoid damaging the furniture?
I appreciate any tips that can help me complete this repair neatly and lasting. Thanks!

If the handles are broken off, sometimes the inner wood can be damaged as well.Thank you, that’s an important point. In fact, the back sides of the wood on two of my handles are a bit chipped; I thought that was normal for Malm after extended use.
How exactly would you prepare the drill holes or wood for installation using filler or dowels? Does it need to dry completely before attaching the new handle?
I also want to replace the screws while I’m at it. What length and material would you recommend? Stainless steel might be better than regular steel screws?

1. Clean the drill holes thoroughly, removing dust and loose wood fibers.
2. For minor damage, use wood filler or putty. Fill the holes and smooth the surface.
3. Allow the material to dry completely for at least 24 hours.
4. Optionally, for larger holes, you can insert dowels (wooden plugs) after enlarging the damaged holes with a drill.
5. Use screws with a maximum diameter of 4 mm (0.16 inches) and about 30 mm (1.2 inches) in length – they should not penetrate deeper than the thickness of the drawer back.
Stainless steel is preferred in moisture-sensitive areas to prevent rust and corrosion.
