Hello everyone,

I have a small problem and hope to get some advice here. A few days ago, a hired craftsman worked on the wall in my apartment and unfortunately completely disassembled my Ikea Kallax shelf. It is now in separate parts, and I have neither the assembly instructions nor any idea how to reassemble it properly.

The shelf is the classic 2x4 Kallax in white with the shelves. All the wooden parts are there, as well as the back panel – the screws and dowels are sorted but unlabeled. I want to reassemble the shelf as stably as possible so that it doesn’t wobble or stand unevenly. The exact order of the parts is also causing me problems, as there are some preassembled sections I need to put together.

Does anyone here have experience with assembling a Kallax? Is there a specific order to follow? I want to avoid damaging or incorrectly assembling any parts. Also, any tips on the proper way to secure it to the wall would be helpful to ensure it stands safely. Thanks in advance!

First, sort all the parts into wood pieces, screws, and the back panel. Then connect the base and side walls, followed by installing the shelves. Attach the back panel last, as this provides stability.
Wall mounting should be done with suitable anchors and screws that are strong enough to support the total weight.

For the structural assembly of a Kallax 2x4 shelf unit, I recommend the following steps:

1. First, sort all parts and check that everything is complete.
2. Connect the two side panels with the top and bottom boards to create the basic frame.
3. Then, depending on the model, insert the divider panels – the order is important here, as some crossbars fit into support dowels.
4. Attach the back panel last, as it primarily provides lateral stability. The back panel should be securely fixed with nails or screws.

For wall mounting: Use heavy-duty anchors and longer screws to secure the shelf against tipping over. Ideally, place the brackets at the top of the side panels. If you have drywall, be sure to use suitable anchors for that material.

Depending on the load, I recommend securing the shelf to the floor to prevent slipping. If there are deviations from the assembly instructions due to pre-assembly, be careful not to twist or overly clamp the components to avoid damage.

This is an important point. The back panel forms the diagonal bracing and prevents the frame from twisting. Without it, the shelf can become unstable later on.

It also helps to do a dry fit of all components before final screwing. This way, the accuracy of fit can be checked before everything is fixed permanently.

For wall mounting, I recommend metal angle brackets, as they provide a solid support surface and significantly reduce the risk of tipping. When the shelf is fully loaded, the mounting should be secured at least at two points along the top.

Great tip! That way, the Kallax stays firmly in place even after rearranging—I’ve had it a bit rough with the kids, and since then everything has been secured with heavy-duty anchors 😉

One more small piece of advice: When sorting the parts, lay them out on the floor in the order the shelf will be assembled. This way, you won’t lose track among all the boards.

Don’t worry, assembling it feels complicated the first time, but the connections are usually straightforward once you understand the sequence. Good luck!
