Hello everyone, I am considering modifying my IKEA Besta system to make it more child-friendly and wanted to ask: Is there a child-safe conversion guide for IKEA Besta that ensures the furniture remains stable despite modifications, has no sharp edges, and is practical for everyday use with children? I mean things like secure handles, possible padding, and child-appropriate adjustments, without having to buy completely new furniture. Perhaps some of you already have experience or guides that clearly and practically describe such a transformation?

- There is no official child-friendly modification guide for IKEA Besta.
- From a safety perspective, securing the unit to the wall and replacing sharp edges with suitable protective strips are the most important measures.
- Handles should be replaced with rounded versions, ideally made from non-toxic materials.
- Padding must be washable and as easy to clean as possible.
- Ensure that all modifications do not compromise the original load-bearing capacity and stability.
This is a DIY project, combining furniture technology and safety considerations. Careful planning is required for implementation.

Implementation requires careful planning.Thank you for the clarification! I was specifically looking for practical advice rather than standard tips—perhaps approaches already tested by others. Are there people here with concrete step-by-step guides or experience reports on how to modify the Besta module so that it is safe and practical, especially for toddlers? I am particularly interested in how you dealt with the edges and which materials you used.

I’m especially interested in how you handled the edges and which materials you used.We used self-adhesive edge protectors made from flexible foam for the edges. They are elastic, so the child can’t hurt themselves on them, and they can be installed without any tools. For the handles, I bought simple soft silicone grips and covered the metal screws with small caps.
Important: This won’t last forever, so regularly check and replace them if they come loose or get dirty. You can never completely eliminate the risk of accidents, but this helps a lot.

We used self-adhesive edge protection profiles made of flexible foam for the corners. This is a practical solution. However, it should be noted that some of these profiles can wear out quickly with heavy use. Additionally, the adhesive may lose effectiveness under different climate conditions, such as humidity.
For long-term solutions, I would recommend covering the edges with wooden strips that are precisely sanded and rounded. Although this requires more effort, it provides better protection and generally looks more premium.

Are there any people here with specific step-by-step instructions or experience reports on how to modify the Besta module so that it is safe and practical to use especially for young children?I arranged my son’s Besta system as follows:
- First, I applied corner protectors to all edges, which I considered very important.
- The handles were replaced with rounded plastic handles designed to slip away easily.
- For safety, I secured the entire piece of furniture to the wall with an anti-tip kit.
- Inside, I use non-slip liners to prevent both drawers and toys from sliding around.
- The furniture is placed on carpet, which helps absorb small impacts.
These measures have made using it safer and are easy to implement. If you like, I can provide more detailed descriptions of each step.
