Hello everyone, I would like to set up Billy shelves from Ikea without the back panel, but I am concerned about stability and safety, especially since I plan to use the shelves in a hallway where they cannot be screwed to the wall. My question is: How can I arrange Billy shelves without the back panel to ensure they are stable and resistant to tipping over? Are there specific methods, materials, or additional parts I can use to guarantee firm stability? I would appreciate any experiences and concrete tips.

It is best to use flush-mounted adjustable feet and place the shelves side by side. Alternatively, you can attach brackets to the sides and secure them to the ceiling or the top of the cabinet.

To safely install Billy shelves without a back panel, I recommend first using reinforced corner brackets attached to the top and sides of the shelf unit. Additionally, securing the individual shelf parts together can increase stability against tipping. It is also important to place the shelves on a level surface and fix them with non-slip pads. In some cases, anchoring the shelves firmly to the floor may be advisable, especially for taller shelf units.

It’s great to see how Billy shelves can be safely installed even without a back panel! 🙂 I would also recommend loading the shelves with heavier books on the bottom, as this significantly lowers the center of gravity and increases stability. Give it a try and you’ll see how steady it becomes!

Hello Lebo9, your question is very relevant, especially if you cannot attach the shelves to the wall. Since the back panel usually provides stability, you should consider other options. For example, you can connect the shelves to each other on the sides or top using metal connector brackets. Adding extra shelves or retrofitting with self-adhesive anti-slip pads on the underside can also improve stability. If possible, a heavy-duty frame or a surround made of wooden slats can be used to basically frame and reinforce the shelving unit.

Thanks, the idea of adjustable feet sounds reasonable. Are the Ikea adjustable feet sufficient, or would it be better to get special, heavy-duty adjustable feet?

Could you please specify which brackets you would recommend – are there particular products that fit well?

I want to avoid the shelves wobbling or tipping over. These are two shelves, each 80cm (31 inches) wide and 2 meters (6 ft 7 in) tall.
