Hello everyone, I have an IKEA Malm bed with a slatted bed base that has recently started to squeak quite a lot when I move on it. The noise mainly comes from the construction of the slatted base itself, not the bed frame. I have already checked whether the screws on the frame are loose, but everything seems to be firmly in place. What are the best steps to fix this squeaking? Do the slats need to be treated individually, or is there a general repair method? I would appreciate any tips, ideally with instructions or proven solutions to effectively eliminate the squeaking.

Apply some silicone spray or furniture wax to the joints of the slats. Also check the contact points where the slats rest on the frame, as this is often the source of the noise.

Hello Makaveh, I can give you a small guide on how to fix the squeaking of the IKEA Malm slatted frame step by step:

1. First, remove the slatted frame from the bed and check all the screws on the frame again, tightening them if necessary.

2. Remove the slats and inspect the plastic holders or rubber supports where the slats rest. These often show signs of wear or damage, which can cause the squeaking.

3. If these holders are damaged, you can find replacement parts at IKEA or use simple rubber pads to reduce friction.

4. Then check each wooden slat for cracks or warping. Sometimes the slats themselves squeak, especially if they rub slightly against each other.

5. To reduce friction at the contact points, use some furniture wax or dry talcum powder – I would avoid silicone oil, as it attracts dust.

6. Then reassemble everything and test the result.

Summary: Check screws, inspect plastic/rubber holders, clean and possibly lubricate the slats.

Be careful not to use oily substances that could damage the slatted frame over time. Good luck with the repair!

I agree with this. A few additions: The main cause of squeaking in Malm-style slatted bed bases is often the friction between the wooden slats and the plastic holders. Cracks in the slats also cause noise under load.

A targeted measure is to place an appropriate rubber buffer or felt pad between each slat and the plastic holder to effectively reduce friction.

I advise against using liquid lubricants like silicone spray, as they can attract dust and cause sticking over time. Dry products like furniture wax or felt materials are preferable.

In conclusion: If the slatted base is severely damaged, it is worthwhile to replace individual slats rather than just repair them.
