Hello everyone,

I have a specific question that will likely concern many parents or households with children: How do you prevent kids from lifting the IKEA KALLAX unit?

I’m asking because I know the KALLAX shelf system is relatively lightweight, and small children could try to lift or even tip it over. My concern is not only about stability but especially safety, as the furniture could fall.

I’m interested in what methods or measures you use to ensure this—whether it’s additional fastenings, special tricks, or recommendations that IKEA might not mention upfront.

I look forward to your experiences and advice!

Sometimes I wonder if it even makes sense to secure everything against children's natural curiosity and strength. Of course, safety is essential, no question about that. But maybe it’s also an opportunity to gently teach them boundaries through play.

I mean, the KALLAX is not a heavy cabinet like a solid wood bar cabinet. If the piece of furniture can be easily lifted, perhaps that is a design flaw. One could ask whether it might be better to buy sturdier furniture instead of constantly having to secure or brace it.

Therefore, I find the discussion about securing interesting, but I also want to provocatively suggest: Maybe we should talk less about “how to prevent” and more about which furniture is truly child-safe and heavy enough to avoid such risks from the start.

That’s an interesting point, but the topic of "furniture safety" is very important for families.

Regarding the main topic: with KALLAX, wall mounting works well. IKEA usually offers some kind of safety kit to secure shelves to the wall. This prevents children from lifting or tipping the furniture.

I also recommend not storing heavy items on the top shelf, as weight distribution greatly affects stability.

For younger children, corner protectors can be added to furniture to prevent injuries from falls.

In general, it is important to place the furniture on a level floor and tighten all screws properly.

I would like to approach this topic in a more technical and detailed way, as there are several aspects often overlooked when securing KALLAX shelves.

First: Although the KALLAX frame is relatively stable, it is made of particleboard, which can flex. This means that if children reach under the shelf and apply pressure, the furniture could tip over.

Second: Wall anchoring is crucial and is often underemphasized in IKEA’s instructions. Proper securing requires the right anchors suitable for the wall type: hollow wall anchors for drywall, heavy-duty anchors for concrete, etc. A simple plastic anchor does not provide sufficient safety.

Third: To prevent lifting altogether, metal brackets can be attached at the back to effectively secure the furniture to the floor or the wall.

Fourth: It is worth optimizing the weight distribution in advance. Heavy items should be placed as low as possible to keep the center of gravity low.

Finally, a question: How old are the children in your case, manli? This makes a difference in choosing the right safety measures.

Good question, thanks for asking! My children are just under 2 and 4 years old. Both are very active, exploring everything and already quite strong. My main concern is that they might accidentally lift the furniture and cause it to tip over. I feel like even the slightest movement near the KALLAX shelf makes me a bit nervous.

I’m already using wall anchors and have secured the shelf to the wall. However, I’m not sure if the clamp hooks I’ve used so far are really sufficient.

Are there any specific brackets or fasteners that you or others would especially recommend?

Also, does it make any difference in tipping risk whether the shelf stands on laminate flooring or carpet?

Hey, the topic of safety with furniture around children is really important – I think you shouldn’t overdo it, but also not be too careless. 🙂

I used an extra trick at home: placing a non-slip mat under the KALLAX, which, combined with wall anchoring, improves stability even more. The mat prevents the furniture from sliding easily on smooth floors, making it much harder to lift and tip over.

Just check hardware stores for "non-slip pads," they often sell them as cut-to-size pieces. My kids have already tried, but no chance. Additionally, the IKEA fittings are OK, but using sturdier metal brackets on the wall feels safer.

Small corner protectors provide peace of mind in case someone bumps into it.
