I have an annoying problem with my Billy shelf: the doors squeak loudly when opening and closing, and it affects the comfort of my living space. Does anyone have experience with effectively eliminating this squeaking sound? I have considered using lubricants like WD-40, but I am unsure if that is suitable for the hinges or if it might damage the material. Are there practical, long-lasting solutions that can be implemented without much effort?

WD-40 usually works very well for squeaky doors. Just spray a little on the hinge and move it a few times. Caution: Do not use too much to avoid getting grease on the wood.

The squeaking in BILLY shelves is often caused by friction in the metal hinges, which can dry out or become dirty over time.

As a proven method, I recommend the following steps:

1. Remove the door: The door can usually be gently pried off the hinge.
2. Clean the hinges: Remove any dust and dirt with a dry cloth or brush.
3. Lubricate: Use a suitable textile or silicone spray, as these do not stick and will not damage the wood.
4. Rehang the door and move it several times to distribute the lubricant.

Please never use oil or grease that is sticky or attracts dirt, as this often makes the problem worse!

In summary: cleaning plus light lubrication with a silicone spray is the best solution.

Oh yes, BILLY doors sometimes squeak really badly! Use a silicone spray – it works great and makes opening them super quiet again! 🙂 Don’t worry, it’s quick to fix and will then open like butter! Give it a try, it will definitely work great! 🙂

WD-40 is primarily a penetrating oil with a mild cleaning effect, but it is not suitable as a long-term lubricant because it evaporates quickly, causing the squeaking to return soon after.

For BILLY doors, I recommend a brand-independent silicone spray or Teflon spray. These provide lasting lubrication and do not attract dust.

Important: When applying, make sure no spray mist gets on the wood surfaces, as some sprays can leave stains. It’s best to take the door off its hinges, apply the spray precisely to the hinge, and allow it to work thoroughly.

Also: Check whether the hinges are securely fixed and if the screws are tight, as looseness can also cause noise.

If you like, I can provide a step-by-step guide on how to proceed.

I can only agree: silicone spray is almost universally the preferred solution for squeaky hinges. WD-40 is only effective in the short term.
